It is especially sad when the cancer patient has not even reached the prime of life. Such was the case when Brian Schultz, 27, lost his fight with cancer 15 years ago. To keep his memory alive, high school and college friends of Schultz got together to remember Schultz and raise funds to support the quest for a cure with the establishment of the Brian Schultz Memorial Foundation. On Saturday, July 25, the foundation’s annual Brian Schultz Memorial Golf Classic — now teeing off in its 14th year — will occur at the Temecula Creek Inn, with proceeds benefiting the Moores UCSD Cancer Center on the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) campus. “With this tournament, we are able to remember our good friend who had a passion for golf and used his experience to support advancements in the fight against cancer,” said Doug Gans, one of several friends who assists in putting the event together each year, in a release from UCSD. “It feels good to be able to support the groundbreaking research under way at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center.” Proceeds from the 2009 event will provide funding to help UCSD’s cancer center meet its most urgent requirements. Since its founding, the Brian Schultz Memorial Golf Classic has raised more than $500,000. Proceeds from past tournaments have gone to cancer research at local nonprofit cancer research institutes, as well as the Brian Schultz Memorial Scholarship at San Diego State University, where Schultz obtained his undergraduate degree. This year’s event kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with registration, a putting contest and a barbecue lunch. The tournament starts at noon, followed by an awards banquet, silent auction and live entertainment. Tickets for the tournament are $195 and include the banquet dinner and a golf shirt.
