The San Diego Natural History Museum has reduced general admission prices from $11 to $9 for adults in anticipation of the arrival of the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit, which begins late June, to make up for the special exhibition’s separate ticket price.
Visitors paying general admission have the unique opportunity to tour prehistoric Southern California, Baja California and Mexico through “Fossil Mysteries,” the museum’s $8 million permanent exhibition.
In addition, visitors can see, touch and study live plants, animals and other elements of nature in the museum’s discovery room.
Also included in the general admission is access to the Ordover Gallery, which will include displays of nature photography as well as admission to the museum’s giant-screen theater.
Beginning June 29, the museum will also display “The Dead Sea Scrolls,” a traveling exhibit promising a large and comprehensive assemblage of ancient and biblical artifacts. According to marketing coordinator Hallie Shere, the museum expects over 400,000 visitors during the six-month-long exhibit.
“This will be the blockbuster exhibition of the year,” Shere said. “A once-in-a-life-time opportunity.”
While general admissions tickets will not give visitors access to the special exhibition, tickets to “The Dead Sea Scrolls” will include admission to the rest of the museum.
The special exhibit will include the photography of Neil Folberg and Duby Tal, whose works are also featured in the museum’s exhibition of contemporary Israeli photography in the Ordover Gallery.
The Natural History Museum will close to the public from Tuesday, June 26 through Thursday, June 28 during the installation of The Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit.
General admission prices will lower to $9 for adults, $7 for adults, $6 for the military, students and youth ages 13 to 17, $4 for children ages 3 to 12 and free for members.
The general admissions price change is projected to run until June of 2008, through next year’s special exhibition “Pompeii.”
