OBTC to fete outstanding volunteers at gala The Ocean Beach Town Council will host its annual awards dinner on Tuesday, Oct. 15 to honor outstanding volunteers and recognize the 2013 Citizen of the Year.
\nThe event will include a no-host cocktail hour at Shades Oceanfront Bistro, followed by dinner and awards. Cocktails begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m.
\nThe gala will also include the administration of the oath of office for the Town Council\u2019s Board of Directors for 2013-14.
\nReservations are $30 in advance or $35 at the door. Shades is located at 5083 Santa Monica Ave.

\nThe Ocean Beach MainStreet Association will celebrate its 35th anniversary awards dinner by honoring local merchants and volunteers in the community who make a difference.
\nThe awards dinner runs from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24 at the Point Loma Masonic Center, 1711 Sunset Cliffs Blvd. Food will be provided by local eateries, along with beer and wine. Women Voters to host forum on FDA, drugs The League of Women Voters will host a discussion titled “The FDA:\u00a0 How Safe Are Your Drugs and Medical Devices?” during the group\u2019s October meeting.
\nThe forum will include a short video on how the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves new drugs and a presentation on the workings of the FDA.
\nAmong the topics:
\n\u2022 What is a generic drug and a “me too” drug?
\n\u2022 What is off-label use of drugs?
\n\u2022 Does the FDA monitor manufacturers worldwide?
\n\u2022 Why do we have drug shortages?
\n\u2022 Should taxpayers fund 100 percent of the drug-approval process?
\n\u2022 Should the FDA permit more prescription drugs be converted to over-the-counter drugs as is done in other countries?
