The Bishop’s School boys volleyball team opened league action recently with a loss to San Dieguito Academy, three games to one.
“We played some of our best volleyball of the season,” Bishop’s head coach Tod Mattox said. “Nick Lake led us with 17 kills and Wheeler Hadden tallied 15. Chandler Frost also enjoyed a solid match with 43 assists.”
Bishop’s defeated Coronado in three straight games, with freshmen David Stotelmyre and Cory Malkiewicz providing excellent play at the net and Sam Gold’s tough serving difficult for the Islanders.
In action last week, Bishop’s lost to Tri-City 3-1.
Solid performances were delivered by Ivan Regalado, Marshall Anderson and Hadden.
A day later, Bishop’s defeated Santa Fe Christian 3-1. Hadden had 15 kills and Regalado added 11. Lake and Will Harris played stellar matches for the Knights. Frost set and led the Knights with 34 assists.
Bishop’s also recently participated in the Scripps Ranch Tournament. According to Mattox, it was tough going for the Knights.
With a couple starters unavailable, they went 0-5, losing to San Marcos, Scripps Ranch and Helix on Friday, and then Clairemont and Mission Hills.
“Though we failed to notch a win, middle blockers Ivan Regalado and Marshall Anderson (in his first start) were excellent, as was libero Pete Semmer and defensive specialist Will Harris,” Mattox said.
At La Jolla High, the Vikings under head coach Dave Jones finished the Scripps Tournament at 2-4.
The Vikings just got their setter Andrew Heap back this week for the first time in over a month. Alex Tobias is still out with an ankle injury, but Jones anticipates his return within the next two weeks.
Matt Jones and Jack Waddell are also playing better after spring break now that they are healthier too.
“Our goal now is to somehow still gain a seed into playoff ” with the potential of peaking there,” Jones noted.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
