Remember the old Indian village of Rinconada<\/b> out by the mouth of Rose Canyon? Oh, that\u2019s right \u2013 you weren\u2019t here in 1769. That\u2019s when Father Serra arrived in these parts and things went south for the coastal Kumeyaay, not to mention the rest of the area natives. It\u2019s not unusual to find someone who can trace his lineage back to the Spanish explorers. On the other hand, I\u2019ve never heard of anyone who told me their ancestors were Indians who lived in Pacific Beach. Pacific Beach Historical Society member Judy Vining Webb sent me a book by Florence Shipek that answered some of my questions. Titled “Delfina Cuero,” it\u2019s, in fact, about Delfina Cuero, the rare native who consented to an interview and talked about what it was like to be a Diegueno Indian, as they were known by the Spanish. I\u2019ve excerpted some of Delfina\u2019s stories and added them to portions of Richard Pourade\u2019s “The Explorers” in the September issue of the Pacific Beach Historical Society newsletter.
