La Jolla-raised cellist Felix Fan was reached earlier this week in New York City, where he said via BlackBerry that he’s trying to recover from playing Morton Feldman’s “Six Straight Nights.”
Fan was about to take off for his La Jolla digs, where he presents his annual mini-music festival, Muzik3, Feb. 2 and 6 at The Other House. This season Fan features the amazing and celebrated Bang-on-a-Can All Stars: David Cossin on drums and percussion; Evan Ziporyn on clarinets; Mark Stewart on Guitars; and Daniel Kelly on piano. Bang-on-a-Can’s bassist, Robert Black, joins the others for the Feb. 6 concert only.
The program at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2 finds cellist Fan and pipa player Wu Man in the company, which plays Cossin’s “Video Phase,” in turn based on “Piano Phase” by Steve Reich.
Also programmed are Daniel Kelly’s “Obfyor,” Mark Stewart’s “Music for Traditional Instruments and Plumbing” and Ziporyn’s “Channeling 3.”
The 7:30 p.m. concert Wednesday, Feb. 6 features the All Stars in performance of Fred Frith’s “Snakes and Ladders,” Alvin Lucier’s “Canon,” Paul Lansky’s “A is for”\u00a6,” Lukas Ligeti’s “Glamourgirl,” Don Byron’s “Eugene” and Ziporyn’s “Shadowbang.” (“Eu-gene” is accompanied by a video from “The Ernie Kovacs Show.”
Readers may have surmised from the plumbing that they’re in for an innovative musical treat.
“I have witnessed some of Mark Stewart’s plumbing performances,” Fan said. “Not only is it musically entertaining, it’s also useful if you have a leaky faucet. As veteran Muzik3 goers know, anything goes and usually does.”
Tickets are $20 general admission and $10 for students. Both concerts may be attended for $15 to $30.
