The next Pacific Beach Graffiti Clean Up, a joint effort by PB Town Council and PB Presbyterian Church, will take place Saturday, April 29 from 9 a.m. to noon, with volunteers gathering at 1675 Garnet Ave. at the church to pick up supplies.
\n“We\u2019ve literally got buckets of graffiti removal supplies,” said Andy Bryl, vice president of PB Town Council. “All we need are volunteers to help clean up the graffiti along the streets and alleys of PB.”\u00a0
\nThe spring tradition was launched in 2008 by Jerry Hall, chairman of the PBTC\u2019s Clean and Beautiful Committee and hosted by PB Presbyterian Church. Scheduling conflicts in 2016 prevented a cleanup last year, but the event is returning this year.\u00a0
\n“Our survey crews have been walking or pedaling around PB, mapping graffiti,” said Graffiti Day co-organizer Jim Menders. “On Cleanup Day, each of the volunteer teams gets a bucket of supplies and a map showing them exactly where to go to work.”\u00a0
\n“The volunteers get a training on how to clean up graffiti tags and stickers,” explained Bryl. “Each team gets a bucket full of graffiti removal spray, scrub pads, gloves and even some paint for covering up stubborn tags. Then we turn \u2018em loose with their map and they spread out over Pacific Beach. Hundreds of graffiti tags are removed each year.”
\nA crew from the San Diego Urban Corps will address oversized graffiti on concrete using a power-washer or a paint roller.
\nThe cleanup starts at 9 a.m. and wraps up at noon. Students can earn community service hours, but those who are under 18 years old must have a waiver signed by a parent.\u00a0This event is made possible by contributions from local businesses and residents and the Pacific Beach Presbyterian Church.
