Today at 8:30 a.m. (Oct. 25), Point Loma Nazarene University sent out a text alert to students that “all classes are canceled for the rest of the day.” PLNU officials say they received information from the FBI about a possible threat to the campus and its resident students. As a result, and “out of an abundance of caution,” the university urged students to stay in their dorms or leave campus and “all non-supervisory employees are dismissed. All services are closed.” However, those who evacuate will not be allowed back on campus until further notice according to PLNU\u2019s Public Safety.
\n“We figured it was better for us just to stay put,” says PLNU senior Whitney Byrd, who elected to remain at her dorm on campus. “Because, if we leave, they won\u2019t let us back in for who knows how long.”
\nAccording to a post at 9:30 a.m. by student Meg Tyndall O\u2019Hearn on Point Loma Connections\u2019 Facebook page, an unknown individual “threatened to shoot his ex-girlfriend,” who is allegedly a student at the university. O\u2019Hearn goes on to write that there\u2019s heavy traffic on Lomaland, making it difficult for those who wish to leave.
\n“The only thing the department can disclose is that it was an online threat,” San Diego police Lt. Eric Hays said in a statement.
\nWhile there have been two reported shootings over the last year in Point Loma\u2019s neighborhood according to the CBS News 8 website, PLNU recently Tweeted an update that there have been “no injuries and no reported incidents on campus or within the Point Loma neighborhood” for this current threat.
