Bird Rock residents came together on Aug. 2 to take advantage of the long summer days and perfect summer weather for a neighborhood picnic in Calumet Park. Catered by Beaumont\u2019s Neighborhood Eatery and hosted by the Bird Rock Community Council (BRCC) and council president Joe Parker, the picnic brought about 150 people out to enjoy each other\u2019s company and the scenic overlook at the park. The annual event, Parker said, is low-key and requires little maintenance. “The nice thing about the picnic is that it runs itself,” he said. “The neighbors tend to congregate and enjoy each other\u2019s company without any need to have specific events. The children play on their own and have a fantastic time. There\u2019s no organization of events other than inviting people to come on out.” Starting at 6 p.m. and continuing past sunset, neighbors munched on typical barbeque fare \u2014 burgers, hot dogs, salads and desserts \u2014 while children climbed trees and dogs relaxed in the grass. The park, Parker said, had been freshly groomed by the city\u2019s maintenance department, and the grass was in great condition and fortuitously free of pet waste. Taking place in lieu of an August BRCC meeting, the picnic is simply a time for Bird Rockers to enjoy their surroundings. “It\u2019s just an opportunity for neighbors to get together, say hello to one another and celebrate great weather and an outstanding park,” Parker said. “It\u2019s really a close gathering of friends and neighbors. “Plus,” he added, laughing, “it\u2019s the one gathering where the neighborhood doesn\u2019t have to listen to me drone on.” Regular BRCC meetings will resume on Sept. 6.
