The La Jolla High School (LJHS) girls\u2019 varsity volleyball team will host its second annual “Dig for the Cure” \u2014 a fundraising event to benefit a local San Diego breast cancer awareness foundation \u2014 in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness month and the team\u2019s upcoming match against University City High School. The LJHS “Dig for the Cure” fundraiser idea evolved from senior Ryan Farley\u2019s humanities project assignment in her English class two years ago. “I had begun to notice more and more high school teams, as well as many college volleyball teams, hosting \u2018Dig for the Cure\u2019 matches benefiting all different breast cancer organizations,” she said. “I really wanted it to be part of our La Jolla volleyball program, so along with the help of my teammates and coaches, last year was our first \u2018Dig for the Cure\u2019 event.” Last year, the event raised $1,500 for breast cancer awareness and research efforts. The Vikings will take on the Centurions on Oct. 19 at 5 p.m. at LJHS. Following the match, LJHS will hold its annual senior night celebration and dinner with proceeds from T-shirt sales, baked goods sales and donations will benefit the breast cancer foundation. Farley said the match against University City is one of the team\u2019s important Western League matches. Two weeks ago, the teams faced off in a close four-game match at University City High School. “We pulled out the win, but next Wednesday\u2019s match will most definitely not be an easy one,” she said.
