Bicycle Warehouse owners Mike and Debbe Simmons need help to reach their goal to send 500 bikes to Africa by March 31. They\u2019re holding an Africa Bike Drive on Saturday, March 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 4650 Santa Fe St. in Pacific Beach. There will be barbecue with a lot of appreciation for everyone\u2019s donations. The Simmons learned about the Africa Bike Drive & Sister Shop Program, started by Mike\u2019s Bikes in San Francisco, and immediately wanted to be a part of it. They have started the Southern California Chapter to further the cause because bicycles can change people\u2019s lives in a positive way providing fitness, freedom and fun. The Africa Project is a nonprofit foundation that establishes self-sustaining bicycle businesses in developing regions in Africa. Bicycle Warehouse is the first Southern California donation location, and will be collecting donated bikes and gear at all of their store locations on an ongoing basis.
\n“The bikes and gear we collect will be shipped to our sister shops in Africa and refurbished before being made available to the local community,” says Debbe Simmons. “Your donated bikes provide access to education, health care, food\/water and employment they did not have beforehand.”
