Point Loma’s Pointer football team wrapped up its recent season with an awards banquet held at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse restaurant on Harbor Island.
\nThe team just completed its first season in the revamped Western League, a league some feel is the toughest in the entire state. Of five league teams, two went on to capture state championships (Madison and Cathedral).
\nAnother league member was perennially-tough St. Augustine, while Mira Mesa was the unfortunate fifth member and represented the only league victory for the Pointers, who thrashed the Marauders, spoiling their homecoming in a 45-14 blowout.
\nOverall, the Pointers finished 5-7, with highlight victories against Ramona, Bonita Vista and a particularly satisfying rebound win in a CIF playoff game against an El Camino team that had defeated them in the season opener.
\nHead coach Mike Hastings and his assistants recognized the following players: All-Western League
\nFirst team, offense: Josh Ball, Davey Folsom. Defense: Patrick Rutledge. Kicker of the Year: Oscar Borjon.
\nSecond team, offense: Kyle Grady, Tim Sheldon. Defense: Arthur Daniels.
\nHonorable mention, offense: Antonio Quintanilla, Pablo Hernandez, Alex Washington, Malik Moore.
\nDefense: Antonio Pelayo, JL Skinner, Michael Blakely. Team Awards
\nScout team defense: Pelayo.
\nScout team offense: Anthony Karty.
\nSpecial teams award: Borjon.
\nMost Inspirational Player: Ball and Daniels.
\nJimmy Howard Semper Fi Award: Folsom.
\nCoach Steve Horrow Memorial Award: Washington and Grady.
\nBob Hammes Most Improved Academics Award: Gabe Hall.
\nCoach Bill Hastings Specialist Award: Nathan Weneta.
\nCoach Bennie Edens Award: Tim Sheldon.
