A driver charged with the hit and run death of a University of California San Diego student was jailed Wednesday after he failed to get a device that would measure any drinking of alcohol as a bail condition.
\nCorundolus Toussaint, 38, of Perris, had been free on $50,000 bond in the Feb. 24 death of Andres Perkins, 21, who was killed at 2:45 a.m. on Interstate 5 near an Old Town Avenue exit.
\nSan Diego Superior Court Judge Maureen Hallahan remanded him into jail when she raised his bail to $140,000 after Toussaint did not get the Scram device as ordered by another judge at his March 8 arraignment.
\nThe previous judge specified that he get the device along with a GPS tracking device by Friday, March 9. A bail review was scheduled for Wednesday after he didn\u2019t get the device.
\nDeputy District Attorney Karra Reedy cited public safety as a reason to include the devices as a bond condition.
\nReedy said the 2004 Honda was found abandoned at a Shell gas station on Pacific Highway with blood on the broken windshield. The car\u2019s license plate fell off on the freeway near Perkins\u2019 body, she said.
\nThe vehicle was registered to Toussaint\u2019s girlfriend, who lives out of town, said Reedy. She noted that Toussaint also lives out of town and has a previous drug conviction from 2014.
\nToussaint works in San Diego. He has pleaded not guilty. A preliminary hearing was set for May 3. He remains in the central jail following the 10:40 a.m. booking Wednesday.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
