Now in their late 50s, the team has remained in touch and members cherish the lifelong friendships formed on what was then a nameless and rather plain diamond. But for this special group, it was their very own Field of Dreams. For the past 15 years, they have formed the core of a Pointer alumni team that returns annually to take on the newest version of the Pointer varsity squad. This year’s game was played Feb. 16, and while their competitive natures are ageless, they confide that, despite lengthy stretching and warm-ups before each year’s game, they will be “sore as hell” the next day. Perhaps these aging ballplayers best illustrate the school’s motto: “Once a Pointer, Always a Pointer.” “What’s been created here (David Wells Field) is phenomenal for Point Loma High School,” said 1973 team spokesperson Steve Grimes. “Fifteen years ago when we started this, we had no idea either the field or alumni game would look like this. Now, we have all these people (1973 to 2012) coming back and, hopefully, the youngsters on the varsity see they can be part of this at some point in time. Point Loma is like a big family, and we’re very fortunate to be able to get together and still do this.”

Forty years ago, a scrappy group of Point Loma High School players won the 1973 CIF baseball championship.
