Emotions ran high with many Ocean Beach residents after learning that one of the oldest Torrey pines in the community was cut down on Monday, Aug. 22. The\u00a0large\u00a0tree\u00a0on the 4600 block of Saratoga was more than 90 years old\u00a0and known\u00a0to many as Esperanza.
\nFor several weeks the Torrey pine has been the center of debate between residents of Ocean Beach and the City of San Diego. Many agreed, including the Friends of Peninsula Trees group,\u00a0that the tree posed a public safety hazard and\u00a0was not healthy enough to be saved.
\nNeighbors and\u00a0members of the community,\u00a0who were for\u00a0saving the tree, hired an independent arborist.\u00a0He stated the\u00a0Torrey pine in\u00a0question\u00a0was\u00a0a\u00a0“low-risk” to the community. Many\u00a0residents agreed and\u00a0felt that with just a little\u00a0love, and a good trim job, that\u00a0the problem would be solved.\u00a0
\nThe majority\u00a0opinion, among\u00a0the neighbors on Saratoga Avenue and residents of OB,\u00a0was\u00a0that\u00a0proper ongoing maintenance was needed for this one tree, along with several other\u00a0old\u00a0Torrey pines\u00a0that are still standing on this same block.
\nOn Aug. 11, the City of San Diego alerted the Ocean Beach community that the landmark Torrey pine would be removed\u00a0on Friday, Aug. 12. Local activists quickly\u00a0joined forces to temporally\u00a0stop the\u00a0tree removal by a public protest and sit-in.
\nMany residents\u00a0were then\u00a0shocked on the early morning of Aug. 22 to hear chainsaws cutting down one of their favorite Torrey pines. The police had quickly taped off the block to prevent any interference.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
