Point Loma and Ocean Beach joined forces with the American Cancer Society\u00a0by having a community Relay For Life. The two-day event was held at Liberty Station over April 22-23. Several hundred\u00a0people participated in the\u00a0Relay For Life and raised more than $13,500, with more donations expected.
\nDonations can still be made by visiting RelayForLife.org\/PtLomaOceanBeachCA. The Point Loma-Ocean Beach\u00a0Relay For Life\u00a0had 19 teams from around the community. One special team was from Point Loma High School. A large number\u00a0of students and adults came together\u00a0to honor the memory of their former vice principal Kevin Gormly. Gormly lost\u00a0a long hard-fought\u00a0battle\u00a0to cancer last year, and was an inspiration to everyone\u00a0who had the privilege to know him.\u00a0The school’s ROTC and choir program\u00a0also participated at the event.
\nAnother\u00a0group that made a significant impact on everyone\u00a0at the Relay For Life\u00a0was\u00a0the team made up of cancer survivors. Their energy and glow was inspirational to both the young and old. After the opening ceremony, the cancer survivor team started off the\u00a0relay with the other teams following.
\nFounded by Dr. Gordy Klatt in 1985, Relay For Life is the largest fundraiser\u00a0to fight cancer\u00a0in the United States and around the world. The event is staffed and coordinated by volunteers in more than 5,000 communities.
