A judge doubled bail to $1 million on Nov. 5 for a man charged with sexually assaulting a Pacific Beach woman after he broke inside through an open bedroom window.
\nJeffrey Dean Hanze, 55, pleaded not guilty to three felony charges in the Oct. 1 incident in which a woman was awakened at 1:45 a.m. by a man sexually assaulting her.
\nHanze is charged with digital penetration of an unconscious person, sexual assault during a burglary, and residential “hot prowl” burglary.
\nDeputy District Attorney Jessica Coto said if Hanze is convicted of all charges he could face a prison sentence of 21 years to life. Coto said that calculation includes extra years he could receive for having a prior conviction of “hot prowl” burglary several years ago.
\nHanze was arrested last week on a $500,000 warrant by sheriff\u2019s deputies in Los Angeles County. He was brought down to San Diego county jail on Nov. 2. Coto asked San Diego Superior Court Judge Jay Bloom to raise the bail to $1 million. “We do believe the defendant is a flight risk,” said Coto.
\nHis attorney, Tom Carnessale, asked for “reasonable bail” without specifying an amount. Hanze waived having his bail reviewed for now.
