The San Diego Padres have acquired right-handed reliever\u00a0Carl Edwards Jr.\u00a0from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for left-hander\u00a0Brad Wieck, executive vice president\/general manager\u00a0A.J. Preller\u00a0announced on July 31.
\nEdwards, 27, has posted a 1-1 record with a 5.87 ERA (10 ER, 15.1 IP), .151 opponents average and 17 strikeouts in 20 games for the Cubs this season, as well as a 2-0 record and a 3.07 ERA (5 ER, 14.2 IP) in 14 appearances with triple-A Iowa.\u00a0 He posted a career-best 2.60 ERA (15 ER, 52.0 IP) in 58 games for Chicago in 2018 with an 11.60 SO\/9.0 IP ratio (67 SO).\u00a0
\nA 2016 World Series champion with the Cubs, Edwards has gone 9-8 with two saves and a 3.30 career ERA (64 ER, 174.1 IP), 1.07 WHIP and 234 strikeouts (12.08 SO\/9.0 IP) in 192 Major League appearances.\u00a0 Since making his MLB debut in 2015, he\u2019s posted the second-lowest opponents average among all qualifying Major League relievers (.152), trailing only Milwaukee\u2019s Josh Hader (.140).\u00a0 Edwards was originally selected by the Texas Rangers in the 48th\u00a0round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of Mid-Carolina Prosperity High School (S.C.) and signed by current Padres\u2019 director of international scouting, Chris Kemp, before being acquired by the Cubs in 2013 in the Matt Garza trade.\u00a0<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
