Criminal proceedings have been suspended for a young man accused of attempted murder and assault of a couple at San Diego International Airport\u2019s parking lot after his attorney doubted he was mentally competent.
\nAlberto Moreno Jauregui, 19, will get a psychiatric evaluation in jail by a doctor before he appears April 16 before a judge to determine if he understands court proceedings. His attorney told a San Diego Superior Court judge she doubted his mental competency, so the judge was required to order his psychiatric evaluation and canceled a preliminary hearing.
\nJauregui is also charged with attempted kidnapping, attempted carjacking and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon in the Oct. 28, 2017 incident near the San Diego International Airport.
\nJauregui is accused of grabbing the woman around the neck and demanding the couple\u2019s car keys. Her husband intervened and he was stabbed several times before the suspect ran off around 5 p.m.
\nThe stabbing victim was seriously injured and taken to a hospital where he was treated for several days before being released.
\nJauregui has pleaded not guilty to all charges and remains in jail on $1 million bail. He was arrested Nov. 7, 2017 by San Diego Harbor Police.
