“Why are the figures faceless?” painter Mark Kostabi asks rhetorically about his artwork. “It’s a universal language free of racial limitations and a reflection of society’s fear of individuality.” La Jolla’s Martin Lawrence gallery, on the other hand, isn’t afraid to mount a Kostabi exhibition like the one going on through April 30 \u2013 a case in point is the pictured oil painting called “Chemistry,” featuring an icy depiction of a male and the fiery countenance of the female counterpart. Kostabi’s artwork has been exhibited everywhere from New York to Rome, and his efforts have yielded some pretty serious rewards \u2013 two years ago, he sold a sculpture for $265,000. He also produces a weekly cable TV show and has designed album covers for Guns ‘N’ Roses (“Use Your Illusion”) and The Ramones (“Adios Amigos”). Figures the Estonia-born Kostabi would go into the latter subspecialty at some point, as he’s a composer himself. See this, though, and be quick about it.
