Roche assumed the reins from previous headmaster Michael Teitelman, who lead Bishop’s for 26 years. The school installed Roche in the early morning of Sept. 16 before an audience of 1,500 people, including Roche’s mother and sister and 98-year-old Rosamond Larmour Loomis, who headed the school from 1953 to ’62. Roche donned a laurel crown and spoke about the wisdom of ancient Greek heroes who continue to offer guidance to leaders today. Roche graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor’s degree in Greek and Latin. “On any given day, each of us might be raging like Achilles and need to quell anger and pride; or steadfast like Penelope, waiting and holding the fort with clever, courageous resolve; or Agamemnon, at a crossroad; or Cassandra, alert, warning, yet unheeded,” she said. Roche said her most difficult challenge is “how to remain grounded in your traditions but nimble in a world that moves very fast.” In her youth, Roche attended the independent Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. After Harvard, Roche taught at The Williams School, St. Andrew’s School, Groton School and at Phillips Exeter. She last served as the assistant head at Groton School. Roche has also served as coach and dorm head, department chair and director of college counseling. “Aimeclaire has achieved the status of something of a guru in independent schools,” said Richard Commons, headmaster at Groton School. Roche has moved into a house in La Jolla and said she relishes getting to know the community. PB will try to get a handle on butts Flicking a cigarette to the ground and snubbing it with your toe is a practice that local groups are attempting to eradicate by attaching 40 cigarette receptacles to lampposts and distributing 400 pocket ashtrays to bar patrons to dispose of their butts. I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) has revamped the cigarette butt pick-up program that Discover PB and Surfrider launched two years ago. With $1,500 in grant money from the national nonprofit Keep America Beautiful, ILACSD relocated eight cigarette receptacles that weren’t being used — such as the one outside 24-Hour Fitness on Garnet Avenue — and asked bars to distribute 400 pocket ashtrays with snap lids to smokers. If smokers pick up the new habit, ILACSD will consider expanding the program to Mission Beach or downtown. Discover PB empties the cigarette receptacles regularly.
