San Diego\u2019s annual free “open streets” celebration, CicloSDias, is coming to Ocean Beach Sunday, Oct. 21 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
\nRenamed CiclOBias, OB streets will be closed Oct. 21 to cars from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. CiclOBias will travel through the main business corridors of Ocean Beach for two-way open streets for non-motorized activity.
\nOpen street celebrations temporarily close streets to automobiles so that people may use them for healthy and fun physical activities like walking, jogging, biking and dancing.
\nOB streets will be closed to cars and there will be no parking along the route. No parking notice signs will be in place 72 hours in advance of the event. Towing will occur for any remaining cars early on Sunday, Oct. 21.
\nParticipants can, walk, ride, stroll, skate and shop in a counterclockwise direction that is free-flowing and at a low rate of speed. Entry to the route is also free-flowing, meaning access to the route is available at any intersection during event hours.
\nAndy Hanshaw, executive director of the San Diego Bicycle Coalition, said CicloSDias (open street) events have been held in business districts citywide, but not in a beach community since Pacific Beach in 2014.
\nHanshaw noted open street events began with Ciclovia in Bogota, Columbia 40 years ago and continue today on a weekly basis. Los Angeles began CicLAvia in 2010 which attracts 100,000 people four times per year.\u00a0
\n“The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, together with local advocates and business districts, have been organizing our version, CicloSDias, since 2013,” said Hanshaw. “CiclOBias will be the sixth open street event we have organized. “The overall goal is to promote healthy, active communities and support local businesses with a free open and engaging event. This event also supports the city’s efforts to reach their Climate Action Plan Goals which call for more people to bike, walk and take transit to work.”\u00a0
\nApproximately 15,000 people are expected to attend CiclOBias.
\nNo registration is required. The event is open to anyone who wants to bike, walk, stroll or skate along some of San Diego\u2019s most significant and historic neighborhoods. People of all ages and abilities are welcome, pets too (on leashes).\u00a0
\nActivities will include special promotions and festivities from local businesses and family oriented entertainment.
