I’m creating a catalog as we speak,” said Clark, who was recently elected vice president of Promote La Jolla, the village’s business improvement district board. Despite Clark’s heightened sense of business ethics and externals such as the downed economy, Maudlin seems to have expanded. Although Clark’s catalog will be available in-store, the business owner was wary of stepping on fellow La Jollans’ territories, announcing the launching of the lighting and drapery hardware catalog in showrooms in the south such as Atlanta and Houston – saying she was hesitant of an online presence. Regarding the economy, Clark said she caters to customers’ needs, seeking more economical prices for materials. “We’re helping people by keeping material costs down. We’re finding less expensive fabrics to keep overall costs down,” Clark said. “People are wanting to justify [purchases]. They want to buy it once and keep it forever.” But the best deals, Clark said, are antiques. “Antiques are a lot less expensive, and they are green because you are recycling,” Clark said. “And they ground a home.” Clark said she enjoys customizing homes with items such as antique Mongolian saddles, mercury bottles and an antique apothecary she found. Maudlin carries cement-cast garden fixtures and more modern chairs. And Clark reupholsters sofas, couches and other furniture for her clients, creating custom furniture unique to spaces. “I like to mix industrial… I do lighting, bedding, custom upholstery for the designer as well as for my own clients,” Clark said.
