TWO UCSD EXTENSION LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS CELEBRATE 35 YEARS<\/strong><\/p>\n

The University of California San Diego Extension will host its 35th Annual Graduation Ceremony for the 2018-2019 class of Executive Perspective for Scientists & Engineers (EPSE) and Leadership and Management Program (LAMP) at 5 p.m., May 22 at Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine. <\/span><\/p>\n

This year’s 60 EPSE and LAMP graduates join more than 2,000 science and engineering professionals with advanced learning and comprehensive business skills. Local companies, including General Atomics, Illumina and BAE Systems, sponsor employees in EPSE and LAMP every year to further enhance their knowledge, adopt new skills and implement valuable new capabilities.  <\/span><\/p>\n

EPSE provides mid- to senior-level science and engineering professionals with several years of supervisory and operational experience with an Executive Perspective on business and management challenges facing today’s economy. EPSE’s nine-month program addresses the need for professional development and was designed with the rising population of scientists and engineers in mind. In contrast to EPSE, LAMP’s five-month program is designed for entry to mid-level professionals taking on leadership and management roles. The course work aims to further enhance their skills and develop a comprehensive management skill set in individual and workgroup leadership, business management fundamentals and personal skill building. <\/span><\/p>\n

The ceremony will feature keynote speaker Scott Byrnes, Northrop Grumman director of communication, navigation and identification products and will kick off with a reception and dinner party. MEET A MERMAID BEACH CLEANUP<\/strong><\/p>\n

GIANNI BUONOMO VINTNERS OF OB WINS AT INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION<\/strong><\/p>\n

San Diego urban winery Gianni Buonomo Vintners of Ocean Beach took home was awarded a Double Gold Medal for its signature 2014 super Tuscan-style Sangiovese at the 2019 Finger Lakes International Wine Competition in New York.<\/span><\/p>\n

The winery was also honored with gold medals for its 2015 Maestrale (a Bordeaux-style blend) and its 2015 Charbono as well as silver medals for its 2014 Avennio (a Rhone-style blend) and its 2014 Blaufränkisch.<\/span><\/p>\n

LA JOLLA INSTITUTE FOR IMMUNOLOGY PRESIDENT NAMED DISTINGUISHED FELLOW<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

The American Association of Immunologists recently named La Jolla Institute for Immunology President and Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Mitchell Kronenberg as an AAI 2019 Distinguished Fellow. A world expert in T cell biology, Dr. Kronenberg is among 52 immunologists, including five Nobel Laureates, selected for the inaugural class of fellows. <\/span><\/p>\n

Election as a Distinguished Fellow is among the highest honors bestowed by AAI and recognizes members for distinguished careers and outstanding scientific contributions as well as their service to AAI and the immunology community. The fellows, many of whom Dr. Kronenberg considers to be longtime friends and colleagues, will be recognized at the AAI annual meeting, Immunology 2019, to be held May 9-13 in San Diego.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Kronenberg is best known for his extensive studies of a subset of specialized T cells known as invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells and their brethren, mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells. Both cell types are an integral part of the innate immune response, which reacts almost immediately to foreign invaders. <\/span><\/p>\n
