The Bishop\u2019s School\u2019s girls\u2019 varsity water polo squad fought off a spirited effort by La Jolla High School and captured the San Diego CIF Div. III Championship by a 9-6 margin at Coggan Pool on Feb. 25. It was the 15th straight finals appearance for the Knights and their ninth title during that time. It was also a rematch of last year\u2019s teams, which Bishop\u2019s also won. The Knights\u2019 Stanford-bound senior goalie Gabby Stone made 15 saves, including 11 in the second half to help secure the win. Freshman Hannah Carrillo scored four goals to lead the team with Jill Bushman adding two goals. La Jolla was led by seniors Ariel Arcidiacono, Scarlett Hallahan and Sarah Young with two goals each, while sophomore goalie Lauren Silver stopped 12 shots in the net. The match was tight in the first half with Arcidiacono staking La Jolla to a 4-3 lead, but Bishop\u2019s responded with quick, inside-scoring passes by Bushman and Carrillo to take a 5-4 halftime advantage. “They are a very confident group and kept responding,” said Knights\u2019 coach Doug Peabody after the match. A half-court lob shot by Carrillo and an inside-scoring pass by Bushman were followed by Jessica Webster\u2019s lob into the corner net that gave Bishop\u2019s an 8-4 lead. When Stone stopped a five-meter penalty shot, the Knights were looking good. La Jolla wouldn\u2019t quit, however. Silver blocked shots, Hallahan scored on her own rebound shot and Young drilled a goal past five Bishop\u2019s defenders after Stone had a rare exclusion foul and the Vikings drew to 9-6 before time ran out, leaving the Knights to celebrate. The cross-town teams had qualified for the final with earlier, semi-final victories on Feb. 23, also at Coggan Pool. Second-seeded La Jolla defeated Cathedral Catholic 12-8 and top-seeded Bishop\u2019s beat Coronado 16-7 to set up the rematch.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
