{"id":280445,"date":"2019-08-08T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-08-08T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/ljsa-endorses-challenged-athletes-foundation-at-july-meeting\/"},"modified":"2019-08-08T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-08-08T07:00:00","slug":"ljsa-endorses-challenged-athletes-foundation-at-july-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/ljsa-endorses-challenged-athletes-foundation-at-july-meeting\/","title":{"rendered":"LJSA endorses Challenged Athletes Foundation at July meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">In July, the La Jolla Shores Association (LJSA) endorsed the Challenged Athletes Foundation&#8217;s (CAF) annual triathlon, and heard about upcoming infrastructure improvements in the neighborhood.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">Katie Huburt of CAF, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit supporting and encouraging the physically challenged to pursue active lifestyles and competitive sports, talked to community planners about the 26th annual Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">The event will be held at La Jolla Shores and La Jolla Cove this year on Sunday, Oct. 20. It is a 1-mile swim, 44-mile bike ride and 10-mile run.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">We&#8217;re a leader in providing people with physical challenges the opportunity to get back into sports,&rdquo; said Huburt. &ldquo;We gave more than 2,600 grants to 103 different sports last year.&rdquo;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">Hubert said the San Diego Million Dollar Challenge fundraising bike ride from the San Francisco Bay Area to San Diego from Oct. 12-18 raises $1 million for challenged athletes and adaptive sports. The ride ends at La Jolla Shores.<\/span><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">It&#8217;s about families, picnicking and surf clinics put on by the Seau Foundation that Friday,&rdquo; said Huburt. &ldquo;There&#8217;s a big celebration at the end welcoming riders back home.&rdquo;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">LJSA board unanimously supported the triathlon.<\/span><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">District 1 staffer Mauricio Medina said funds will be in next year&#8217;s city budget to repave La Jolla Parkway. He added there is also $1.3 million in next year&#8217;s budget for brush removal in that area.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">It&#8217;s a fire hazard in those weeds,&rdquo; said LJSA chair Janie Emerson. &ldquo;Somebody could just throw a cigarette and there are homes behind it.&rdquo;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: x-small; font-family: Verdana, serif;\">Medina reiterated that the Get It Done app on the city&#8217;s website remains the best way for people to report problems and infrastructure issues that need to be addressed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">In other matters:<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: x-small; font-family: Verdana, serif;\">Mary Coakley Munk, wife of the famed late Scripps oceanographer Walter Munk, said two events are being planned to celebrate what would have been his 102nd birthday in October: a symposium at Scripps Institution of&nbsp;Oceanography and a paddle-out for Walter set for Saturday, Oct. 19.
