In July, the La Jolla Shores Association (LJSA) endorsed the Challenged Athletes Foundation’s (CAF) annual triathlon, and heard about upcoming infrastructure improvements in the neighborhood.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Katie Huburt of CAF, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit supporting and encouraging the physically challenged to pursue active lifestyles and competitive sports, talked to community planners about the 26th annual Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The event will be held at La Jolla Shores and La Jolla Cove this year on Sunday, Oct. 20. It is a 1-mile swim, 44-mile bike ride and 10-mile run.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe’re a leader in providing people with physical challenges the opportunity to get back into sports,” said Huburt. “We gave more than 2,600 grants to 103 different sports last year.”<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Hubert said the San Diego Million Dollar Challenge fundraising bike ride from the San Francisco Bay Area to San Diego from Oct. 12-18 raises $1 million for challenged athletes and adaptive sports. The ride ends at La Jolla Shores.<\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s about families, picnicking and surf clinics put on by the Seau Foundation that Friday,” said Huburt. “There’s a big celebration at the end welcoming riders back home.”<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

LJSA board unanimously supported the triathlon.<\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n

District 1 staffer Mauricio Medina said funds will be in next year’s city budget to repave La Jolla Parkway. He added there is also $1.3 million in next year’s budget for brush removal in that area. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s a fire hazard in those weeds,” said LJSA chair Janie Emerson. “Somebody could just throw a cigarette and there are homes behind it.”<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Medina reiterated that the Get It Done app on the city’s website remains the best way for people to report problems and infrastructure issues that need to be addressed.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>Mary Coakley Munk, wife of the famed late Scripps oceanographer Walter Munk, said two events are being planned to celebrate what would have been his 102nd birthday in October: a symposium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and a paddle-out for Walter set for Saturday, Oct. 19.
