Summer Concerts kick off July 9
\nThe University City Summer Concerts lineup kicks off with the band Forecast, who are celebrating 40 years of playing jazz-rock-fusion. Starting in 1977, the band was started as a duo by University City\u2019s Greg Pardue and Charlie Cates, later becoming a quartet. The current group has been together for more than 30 years. Forecast has played during the UC Summer Concerts for seven years in a row, and will be performing many of their long-time favorites, as well as some original songs and a few gems from the past that haven\u2019t been heard for some time. The UC Summer Concerts are held at Standley Park on Governor Drive, and are sponsored by the Standley Park Recreation Council, UCCA, Regency Centers\/Costa Verde, and Scripps Health. \n\u00b7 July 30 \u2013 Full Strength Funk Band \u2013 Soul and R&B \u2013 with UC resident Pamela Gallo;
\n\u00b7 Aug. 6 \u2013 Relative Minors and Friends\u2013classic rock \u2013 with UC resident Greg Zinser;
\n\u00b7 Aug. 13 \u2013 Teaser\u2013 arena rock \u2013 with UC resident Rick Kern;
\n\u00b7 Aug. 18 \u2013 Sully and the Blue-Eyed Soul Band\u2013soul and R&B \u2013 with radio and TV host Bob “Sully” Sullivan;
\n\u00b7 Aug. 25 \u2013 The Legends Show Band\u2013 50s and 60s oldies;
\nFriday concerts are from 6 to 8 p.m and Sunday concerts are from 5 to 7 p.m. Concerts are subject to cancellation due to inclement weather. \nLegacy of Marian Bear continues to this day
\nStudents in Mr. Deron Bear’s third and fourth-grade class at Spreckels Elementary School created a snake panel as part of their life science curriculum. This panel was then installed in a park kiosk in Marian Bear Memorial Park. The class took a walking field trip to the park in order to view the panel, which highlights the local snakes that live in the park. Marian Bear was instrumental in preserving the vast open space of San Clemente Canyon just south of the 52 Freeway. She and other community leaders successfully convinced city officials that the freeway should be located above the canyon in the north hillsides rather than in the area of the park. Due to her foresight and perseverance, the 467-acre park, which was rededicated as Marian Bear Memorial Park by the City of San Diego leadership in July 1979, can be enjoyed year-round, offering several miles of accessible hiking trails.

\nOn Saturday, July 8, there will be a UC San Diego Blood Bank Bloodmobile Blood Drive at the Sprouts\/Starbucks Marketplace on Governor Drive from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. You’ll find the Bloodmobile in the center of the parking lot. Sign up at www.mysdbb.org. Spontaneous blood donors and blood buddies are always welcome and recommended to pop in between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Additional blood drives are scheduled for Saturdays. There will also be blood drives held on Sept. 9 and Nov. 4. EdUCate! 2017 scholarships
\nThis scholarship is in memory of and to honor Thalia Murray, who taught in the SDUSD system for 20 years, including 17 years at Marcy Elementary (now Mission Bay Montessori). She received a scholarship that allowed her to attend a four-year college, which dramatically changed her life for the better. The goal for this scholarship is to have a similar impact. This $2,000 Scholarship was awarded to Veronica (Nikky) Berta,.
\nVolunteer service
\nThis scholarship is offered by the board of directors of EdUCate! University City Foundation for Public Schools to recognize two UCHS students for the spirit and practice of volunteerism in the community. Congratulations to Helen Tang and Nathaniel Stewart, recipients of the 2017 EdUCate! Volunteer Service Scholarship in the amount of $500.
\nRay Perkins
\nIn memory of Ray Perkins, a UCHS teacher in the science department who passed away Jan. 27, 2012. Congrats to Ryan Hallisey, recipient of the 2017 Ray Perkins Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $500.
\nSonnenberg Business
\nThe Sonnenberg family and Sonnenberg CPA firm offer two $1,000 scholarships. The scholarship offers assistance to UCHS students pursuing a business-related career at a two- or four-year college. The Sonnenbergs recognize candidates having a GPA of 3.0 or higher that have shown a combination of achievement that includes outstanding citizenship, volunteerism, school involvement, etc. This year, the scholarship was awarded to two male students, Joshua Cure and Kelvin Mac.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
