National Nite Out is being held locally 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1 at Pacific Beach Taylor Branch Library, 4275 Cass St.
\nNational Night Out is an annual community-building campaign to promote police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. It enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing a sense of community.
\n“This is really a unique event,” noted Christina Wainwright, PB Library branch manager. “All of the activities are meant to bring the neighborhood together, and give people an opportunity to meet and discuss things, from a crime-prevention standpoint.”
\n“Last year, 48 million neighbors gathered throughout the nation for National Nite Out,” said event organizer Andie LaComb, who lives in the surrounding PB neighborhood. Pointing out the event will be activity-packed, LaComb added, “It’s free. We also will have people there volunteering doing tai chi and yoga. Food will be available for purchase from food trucks.”
\nThe event will be taking over the entire library grounds. Community groups will be at the front of the library on the Cass Street grass.
\nThere will be a bike rodeo around the sidewalk on the Cass Street. side. Demonstrations to be given will include classes, games, a photo spot, a fire truck, amazing bubbles, and food trucks on the Dawes Street side.
\nDemonstrations and classes include:
\n5:30 \u2013 Red Dragon Stranger Danger class or Tai Chi;
\n6 – SDPD K9;
\n6:30 \u2013 Yoga or library\u2019s pajama storytime for the kids;
\n7 \u2013 SDPD K9.
\nCouncilMember Lorie Zapf and State Assemblyman Todd Gloria plan to attend and speak.
\nCommunity groups involved will include:
\nBeautiful Mission Beach;
\nDiscover PB Clean and Safe;
\nPB Garden Club;
\nPB Library and Friends of Library;
\nPB Planning Group;
\nPB Rec Center;
\nPB Street Guardians;
\nPB Town Council;
\nPB Women\u2019s Club;
\nRed Dragon;
\nSave PB;
\nSDPD fingerprinting and kids identification;
\nSD Police Foundation;
\nSen. Toni Atkins representative.
\nFood trucks will be donating a portion of their sales to the PB Clean and Safe program that hires homeless individuals to clean and maintain the streets in PB’s business district, as well as hiring safety ambassadors to provide security and outreach.
\nThe event would not be possible without the help, donations, and reduced fees from: Marcella Teran, Racheal Allen, Nicole Burgess, Yoga instructor Dee Anne York, Tai Chi instructor Kay Duran, Shigong Theodore Guerrero from Red Dragon Shou Shou, Elam\u2019s Amazing Bubbles, PB Town Council, the PB library, and all of the volunteers.
