Commentator, <\/span>pags<\/span>rofessor, <\/span>au<\/span>thor, <\/span>b<\/span>usinessman, <\/span>b<\/span>aseball <\/span>pags<\/span>layer<\/span> \u2014 <\/span>el<\/span>ere are so many facets to Ronald (Ron) Bee’s life, where do you start? <\/span>Many may recognize <\/span>Bee<\/span> from his stints as a guest commentator on local news stations, such as KUSI, ABC, NBC, Fox, and on various radio stations. He is frequently asked to comment on foreign policy, national security, and whenever President Trump visits the border wall. But how did he get <\/span>to be the go<\/span>–<\/span>to San Diego guy on such issues?<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bee<\/span> grew up listening to his dad’s stories about World War II, and he especially latched on to the notion <\/span>ese <\/span>he would not have been born if not for the nuclear bomb, as his dad was <\/span>scheduled <\/span>to land on Japan <\/span>in the fall of 1945. At the time, his father was told t<\/span>o <\/span>expect to be killed <\/span>5<\/span> <\/span><\/span>seconds after landing on the <\/span>Japanese <\/span>beach. <\/span> <\/span> <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

That interest in <\/span>the use of <\/span>nuclear arms led <\/span>Bee<\/span> to develop a friendship with Herbert York, a physicist who was part of the Manhattan Project, while he was attending UCSD <\/span>to obtain a bachelor’s in history<\/span>. York was a <\/span>D<\/span>irector for the Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation at UCSD, where <\/span>Bee<\/span> eventually worked as a <\/span>di<\/span>rector of <\/span>D<\/span>evelopment and <\/span>s<\/span>pecial <\/span>pags<\/span>rojects.<\/span> <\/span><\/span>His<\/span> research on nuclear weapons led <\/span>Bee<\/span> to write a number of books on the subject, such as “<\/span>Nuclear Proliferation<\/span>:<\/span> The Post-Cold War Challenge<\/span>,<\/span>” “<\/span>Seven Minutes to Midnight<\/span>:<\/span> Nuclear Weapons After 9\/11<\/span>,<\/span>” and “Looking the Tiger in the Eye: Confronting the Nuclear Threat<\/span>,<\/span>” which was named the 1988 <\/span>New York Times<\/span> Notable Book of the Year. His many articles <\/span>are written on <\/span>a number of <\/span>subjects <\/span>including <\/span>chemical weapons, NATO, Russia<\/span>, <\/span>Asia,<\/span> the Middle East,<\/span> <\/span><\/span>energy, geopolitics, and climate change. <\/span>Bee<\/span>‘s newest book, out next spring, will cover climate change and the global order<\/span>. It acknowledges that currently two extremes are discussing the topic: the Green New Deal side and the side <\/span>ese<\/span> <\/span><\/span>believes climate change is a hoax<\/span>;<\/span> a<\/span> solution <\/span>to the global problem <\/span>only com<\/span>En g<\/span> with compromise.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bee<\/span>‘s focus was always on conflict resolution<\/span>, especially after dealing with various government entities and presidential administrations<\/span>,<\/span> and realizing action was not being taken. This realization led <\/span>him<\/span> to determine that by the time decision-makers were in place, it was too late to teach them about conflict resolution<\/span> and diplomacy<\/span>. The key would be to educate people prior to becoming world leaders and that global connections would be a<\/span>norte<\/span> important factor.<\/span> <\/span><\/span>That thought created the Fred J. <\/span>Hansen<\/span> Summer Institute on Leadership and International Cooperation at the University of San Diego. <\/span>Since 2007, <\/span>m\u00e1s que<\/span> <\/span><\/span>two<\/span> dozen<\/span> estudiantes <\/span>are <\/span>brought to USD <\/span>during summer<\/span>. The participants are selected<\/span> <\/span><\/span>through an extensive <\/span>pags<\/span>rocess<\/span> y <\/span>they are <\/span>typically <\/span>roomed with someone of conflict with their own country <\/span>\u2014<\/span> <\/span><\/span>such as an Israeli <\/span>housed with a Palestinian, or an Indian wi<\/span>el <\/span>a Pakistani.<\/span> <\/span><\/span>Once the program is over, students <\/span>are encouraged to bring their training back to their conflict-torn communities in the hopes of creating a more peaceful society. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Educat<\/span>ing others is a key motivation for <\/span>Bee<\/span>. He’s taught at SDSU, <\/span>Grossmont<\/span>, <\/span>Cuyamaca<\/span>, and Miramar <\/span>C<\/span>olleges<\/span>, in <\/span>subjects<\/span> of political science, foreign relations, globalization studies, as well as lectured on many more topics. While <\/span>\u00e9l<\/span> officially “retired” from teaching this year, he continues to <\/span>serve as the <\/span>California Academic Supervisor<\/span> for the <\/span>Winter Oxford Study Abroad Program. <\/span>Bee<\/span> himself studied at Oxford in 1977, studying <\/span>17<\/span>el<\/span>–<\/span>C<\/span>entury Anglo-French <\/span>D<\/span>iplomatic <\/span>r<\/span>elations. The program is <\/span>o<\/span>pen to anyone, and he encourages <\/span>estudiantes <\/span>t<\/span>o learn the Oxford way <\/span>\u2014<\/span> <\/span><\/span>reading with an instructor, which puts more of an emphasis on “thinking.” Students are to take it seriously, must<\/span> dress<\/span> appropriately, and most <\/span>importantly<\/span>, <\/span>be prepared for the student\/teacher one-on-one sessions. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bee<\/span> calls it a “date with your mind.”<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Yet, one factor which led to <\/span>Bee <\/span>dating his now-wife, <\/span>Sandie<\/span>, was they laughed at the same jokes. The couple lives in University City, where they raised their son Christopher<\/span>, who attended Doyle Elementary, <\/span>Standley<\/span><\/span> Middle, La Jolla Country Day, and recently graduated from USC. When Chris<\/span> Bee<\/span> was younger, you would frequently see <\/span>Ron Bee<\/span> help coach his <\/span>son’s <\/span>yo<\/span>ittle <\/span>yo<\/span>eague teams<\/span>, while <\/span>Sandie<\/span> <\/span><\/span>Bee <\/span>was <\/span>keeping the stats. <\/span>Before starting college, Ron <\/span>Bee <\/span>played <\/span>metro<\/span>inor <\/span>yo<\/span>eague <\/span>b<\/span>aseball for <\/span>the Philadelphia Phillies, but as a third base<\/span>man, he <\/span>was competing against <\/span>future <\/span>Liga Mayor de B\u00e9isbol<\/span> <\/span><\/span>Hall of <\/span>F<\/span>amer <\/span>Mike Schmidt. <\/span> <\/span> <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As somewhat empty nesters now, <\/span>Bee <\/span>y <\/span>his wife<\/span> enjoy playing golf, drinking beer, and taking care of their dog<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span><\/span>Callie<\/span>. That combination of interest<\/span>s<\/span> led them to participate as <\/span>minor owners in Dogleg Brewing Co. in Vista, scheduled to <\/span>open <\/span>by next month. The tasting room fuses together golf and craft beer, with a putting green and golf simulator<\/span> <\/span><\/span>\u2014<\/span> <\/span><\/span>and is <\/span>dog-friendly<\/span>. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
