UC SAN DIEGO CELEBRATES LONG-STANDING WATERMELON DROP TRADITION<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the end of each academic year, a great honor is passed to one lucky UC San Diego Student — the honor of “Watermelon Royalty.”<\/p>\n

Since 1965, students have elected one of their own to carry a sacrificial watermelon to the top of seven-story Urey Hall, drop it in the midst of a captive audience and measured how far the splat reaches. The Watermelon Drop is UC San Diego’s oldest student tradition.<\/p>\n

The annual physics experiment started 55 years ago when physics professor Bob Swanson asked the exam question: “What would be the terminal velocity of a watermelon dropped from the seventh floor of Urey Hall, and how far would it splat?” The record splat happened in 1974 at 167 feet, 4 inches. This year’s splat measured 72 feet.<\/p>\n

The 2019 Watermelon Royalty was Revelle College Acting Provost Kate Antonovics. She also serves as an associate teaching professor in the Department of Economics. After the drop, students were invited to a festival with fresh watermelon, corn dogs, and other treats in Revelle Plaza. The UC San Diego Pepband provided entertainment. SURFRIDER FOUNDATION ANNUAL SUMMER GALA

The Surfrider Foundation San Diego County will host its 18th annual Endless Summer Art Gala and Auction at 7 p.m. June, 21 at Seaside Room, 1936 Quivira Way. Tickets cost $85 now and $95 at the door. R.B. STEVENSON GALLERY OPENING RECEPTION

PINNACLE REMODELING TO OPEN LA JOLLA OFFICE <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Colliers International San Diego Region recently announced that Pinnacle Remodeling, a San Diego-based full-service home remodeling company, has acquired a 2,028-square foot mixed-use property in La Jolla’s Bird Rock neighborhood for $1,150,000.
 
Pinnacle Remodeling plans to open the company’s office and retail space at the property immediately. The residential and retail property is located on a 4,359-square foot lot at 5761-63 La Jolla Blvd.
