Jeanie Carlstead, founder and director of La Jolla Yoga Center (LJYC), first met accomplished yoga master Erich Schiffman 23 years ago when she was practicing at a studio in Encinitas. “I had been doing yoga for a little while, and my practice was OK, but I couldn\u2019t do everything other people could do,” said Carlstead, a longtime La Jollan and University of California, San Diego alumnae. He came up to me and told me I had a good practice. He saw something in me because I was experiencing so much joy.” Since then, Schiffman has been a major mentor to Carlstead, who has in turn become a mentor to many at LJYC, located at 7741 Fay Ave. She will be welcoming Schiffman to the center March 25-27 for a special workshop. Schiffman, known to many as a “teacher\u2019s teacher,” has been passionately involved in yoga for almost 40 years and has been named one of the most innovative yoga teachers in the country by Yoga Journal. He wrote the book “Moving into Stillness” decades ago and it is one of the best-selling yoga books to this day. Carlstead said Schiffman\u2019s practice is not a physically challenging one, but more of an effort to help people release tension. “People find themselves having incredible insights in his class,” said Carlstead, adding that she is very particular about who she brings to LJYC as a guest teacher. “Erich is so authentic.
