{"id":276186,"date":"2019-08-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-08-10T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/pier-jump-the-sequel-to-be-held-on-aug-12-2\/"},"modified":"2019-08-10T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-08-10T07:00:00","slug":"pier-jump-the-sequel-to-be-held-on-aug-12-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/pier-jump-the-sequel-to-be-held-on-aug-12-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Pier Jump, the sequel, to be held on Aug. 12"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Prevent Drowning Foundation of San Diego and the San Diego Junior Lifeguards invite you to join us as the second session junior lifeguards, parents and public take a leap off the Ocean Beach Pier in this annual fundraiser 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 12.<br \/>\nSan Diego Junior Lifeguards participating in this Pier Jump will be sharing their stories on how they learned to swim through this funded program at Hage Elementary.<br \/>\nAccording to &#8220;Buc&#8221; Buchanan, president of the Prevent Drowning Foundation of San Diego, &#8220;More than 840 people have drowned in San Diego in the last 20 years. It\u2019s important for children in our community to have the opportunity to enjoy the water safely. We are a local nonprofit helping San Diego kids from local schools learn to swim in local pools. Every $100 donation can save a life by funding swim lessons for one child in our community.&#8221; Did you know\u2026<br \/>\nThe goal of swim lessons is to make children safer in, on, and around water.\u00a0 \u2022 Among children 1-14, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury death.\u00a0 \u2022 Formal swimming lessons reduces the likelihood of childhood drowning by 88 percent.\u00a0 \u2022 79 percent of children in households with incomes less than $50,000 have little-to-no swimming ability. \u2022 Research shows 64 percent of African-American, 45 percent of Hispanic\/Latino, and 40 percent of Caucasian children have little to no swimming ability.<br \/>\nThe mission of the\u00a0Prevent Drowning Foundation of San Diego\u00a0is to save lives by funding swim lessons for underserved youth and providing aquatic safety education for all.\u00a0Drowning is preventable and it is our vision to teach every child in San Diego County how to swim!<br \/>\nFoundation impacts for 2018: $150,000 funded impacting more than 10,500 kids.
