Happy Mother\u2019s Day, readers! When I started this column, I knew right away I would be doing some makeovers \u2014 it\u2019s definitely something I\u2019m passionate about. I\u2019m a huge fan of TLC\u2019s “What Not To Wear” and the opportunity to channel my inner Stacy London and Clinton Kelly was too exciting to pass up. And what better time to give it a go then Mother\u2019s Day? The Marines have a slogan: “It\u2019s the toughest job you\u2019ll ever love,” but I think we moms could borrow it, as well. Talk about a tough job \u2014 always on call, no days off, acting as chauffer, ATM machine, event planner\/coordinator, maid, short-order cook, nurse, etc. But we do all these things day in and day out for the love of these little people who bring so much joy and chaos to our lives. So, in my search I was able to round up two moms who were willing to turn themselves over to me for a day of pampering, and the results speak for themselves. My first mom is Terry Evans, a mother of five (talk about busy) who likes fashion but doesn\u2019t really have time do much shopping or follow trends closely. Her “before” look is pretty basic: jeans, white T-shirt, black shrug and hair pulled back in a ponytail. I really enjoyed working with Terry because she was so open to change. Fashion is about having fun, being daring and trying new things, and Terry did all of the above. When she met me at The Gap\/UTC and saw the rack I had pulled, she picked out the yellow pants first thing and stared asking about what to do with them. I knew right then we were going to have fun and see great results. What we ended up with were the yellow denim leggings, bold blue tunic-style top and beaded sandals. These pieces go well together and can break apart to make several different outfits, as well. She can wear the sandals with just about everything from shorts to a maxi skirt. The tunic will go great with boyfriend or white jeans and the yellow leggings can do a more casual look with a navy and white striped T-shirt and denim jacket. Next, let\u2019s talk hair. Her cut and color are great but what is a makeover with out pampering? Here, I had the help of my hair stylist, Kiley Artukovich, for one of my favorite indulgences \u2014 a blowout. Terry\u2019s hair is straight, shiny and moves like a Revlon commercial. I love this treat for big events like weddings or a guiltless pick me up. Depending on your hair length, it is fairly inexpensive and lasts a couple of days. Now on to make up. Kristina Soldani from Bobbi Brown at Nordstrom La Jolla did an amazing job keeping it simple, fresh and on point for the season. Both moms\u2019 looks were created from the “Miami Collection.” This summer collection is inspired by healthy, glowing and sun-kissed skin with a pop of color on the cheeks and lips. Some of the products used were the long-wear cream shadows, gel eyeliner, rich color lipstick and one of Kristina\u2019s (and my own) favorite products \u2014 bronze shimmer brick. All products are long wearing and look effortless. I love Bobbi\u2019s philosophy about makeup: it should look and feel natural, which also fits in perfectly with a busy mom\u2019s lifestyle. Speaking of busy moms, let meet my second recruit, Rachel Kim. Rachel is a doctor and mother of two. Similar to Terry, she likes fashion but doesn\u2019t have the time to shop or keep up with the ever-changing fashion world. Her before look is a typical mom uniform \u2014 black workout wear. My job was to push Rachel out of her comfort zone \u2014 and into some color. When we met at Gap\/UTC she, too, was open-minded and ready for anything. I had several options pulled, and we settled on an amazing maxi dress with the chevron stripe. Once we had the dress, accessorizing was easy. I love a denim jacket, so I paired the dress with a minimally distressed white jacket that really made the orange and pink pop. I also added playful beaded sandals and stacked leather bracelets. Rachel looked spring-ready and agreed that her comfort level was not compromised. She loved the softness of the maxi dress and how she could throw it on and go. She could easily change the jacket out for a boyfriend cardigan or a scarf and have a totally different look. Speaking of a different look, Rachel\u2019s blowout made a huge difference. Her cut and color are awesome, but again I had to indulge this hard-working mom. Joseph Bruglio from Salon Paragon (5749 La Jolla Blvd., (619) 302-8860) did an amazing blowout for her. Even Rachel was giddy when she saw the final result and had no idea this simple pleasure could have such an impact on her look. I want to thank everyone who helped my first makeover a great success.
