Now you can, by going\u00a0shopping in the Village.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>That&#8217;s the idea behind Two Neighbors, a new fashion brand that is inseparable from its\u00a0mission: to promote collaboration, capitalism, and ultimately peace, between Israelis\u00a0and Palestinians.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>A Two Neighbors retail store opened doors at its Girard Avenue location in March. It is\u00a0the company&#8217;s first store in the United States, said Tara Sauvage, who heads production,\u00a0marketing, and sales. According to her, La Jolla was chosen partly because of &#8220;its\u00a0strong Jewish community and international visitors.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>For purchase in the Two Neighbors store is an array of fashionable garments produced\u00a0jointly by Palestinians and Israelis through a women&#8217;s co-op. The modern garments,\u00a0which feature elements of ancient Palestinian embroidery, are designed by Palestinians,\u00a0made in Israel, and sold in America through its Girard Avenue store.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>&#8220;Our best sellers are the Adeem leather tote bag in leather with a Palestinian\u00a0embroidery strap,&#8221; said Sauvage. &#8220;We also sell a lot of jackets, sundresses, and\u00a0embroidery clutch bags.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>Customers receive a special brochure that explains the Two Neighbors&#8217; vision for peace\u00a0in the Middle East.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>On its website, Two Neighbors is described as a fair trade producer of textile goods that\u00a0enables women of limited means &#8220;to carry on ancient traditions while earning a fair\u00a0wage for their work.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>&#8220;The business model is set up to support the women in the Palestinian region and in\u00a0Israel,&#8221; said Sauvage. All proceeds from sales of merchandise are reinvested in the\u00a0women&#8217;s co-op.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>What makes Two Neighbors compelling is that it&#8217;s not driven by pie-in-the-sky idealists\u00a0but by seasoned, practical business people who want to do good.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>Two Neighbors is the brainchild of Whit Jones and Andy McCluskey, two life-long\u00a0friends from Idaho with a penchant for tackling global issues.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>Their first meeting was held at a\u00a0small border town\u00a0between Israel and the Palestinian\u00a0territories\u00a0\u2014\u00a0one of the few places where Israelis and Palestinians are free to meet on\u00a0equal ground. This is where the concept for Two Neighbors was hatched.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>The founders knew pulling it off would be no easy feat. As their website puts it, they\u00a0were embarking on &#8220;an against-the-odds business partnership that defies politics in\u00a0favor of beauty, common sense, and shared economic benefit.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>Jones and his wife Paula have since stepped back, allowing a small team of women to\u00a0run the\u00a0day-to-day operations.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>At the end of the day, Two Neighbors is about creating products that embody and\u00a0integrate two very different cultures.
