En Concordia stocks a complete assortment of garden mixes, potting soils and natural amendments from farms in California and Oregon.
“Nourish the soil, feed your plants and combat pests naturally with people and pet-safe products you can feel good about,” extols Renfro’s website noting, “Our collection of products embraces the splendor of finely crafted things for the garden, for beauty, for cheese boards and cocktails: well-crafted, sustainable products sourced directly from the farmer or the fabricator or the chef for you and the people you care about.”
Born in Point Loma, Renfro moved away during her early adulthood, but then returned. She’s proud to be part of a new, re-emergent business community in a resurgent neighborhood.
“When I was a child this (Roseville) was a robust place,” said Renfro noting, years ago, residents could grab an ice cream soda at the drugstore then shop locally for any number of products and services.
The neighborhood has come full circle. Renfro noted she’s now surrounded by like-minded “synergistic” businesses like Yoga Arts and Beach Community Acupuncture.
Also nearby is a credit union, Point Loma Bookstore, a coffeehouse, salons and restaurants including Westy’s and a new Vietnamese eatery, Pho & Grill, that will be opening soon.
According to its website, En Concordia is very happy to reside at the bottom of the hill, “where land becomes bay, on the old La Playa Trail, a few paces from Ballast Point. We welcome your dog and we have books and a chair for your children and we always want to talk plants and goat’s milk soap. We have big bags of organic compost and plants and gifts galore. Stop in on your stroll to the bay or drive down and park in the back off of Upshur Street.”
Touring Renfro’s deep retail space, she noted it took some doing to transform the red-floored, green-walled, “oppressively dark” space. “It (space) formerly housed a Pilates studio, a coffee importer and a small gift store,” said Renfro adding, “I freed it. I edited the rectangle and turned it into a home and garden store.”
Out back is her Pollinator garden on the patio where Renfro grows flowers and vegetables in patio boxes.
“This is the year of the year of the soil internationally,” said Renfro noting “That’s the conscious realization that you want to preserve topsoil.”
Asked for advice on topsoil, Renfro replied, “If you’re potting, you should really go for the most premium potting soil you can get because the most inhospitable place to put plants is in a pot. If you’re gardening in the ground, then you should pay attention to the seasonality of when you grow soil, and when you plant.”
Of her location, Renfro concluded, “You just can’t beat these last two blocks. You can’t beat the sun. You can’t beat the breeze. It’s just a convivial place. It just works.” En Concordia
Where: 1021 Rosecrans St.
Hours: Closed Monday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays.
Info: (619) 677-2866, email Theresa@enconcordia.com or visit www.enconcordia.com.

En Concordia, which means “in harmony,” is what every home gardener needs, as well as being a business that blends seamlessly with its surrounding Roseville neighborhood at the end of Rosecrans Street in Point Loma Village. “It’s something I always wanted to do,” said owner Theresa Renfro of her new home-and-garden boutique at 1021 Rosecrans […]

[11561

post-272382","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-peninsula-beacon
["GET
