Current therapies for liver cancer are largely ineffective, but new preclinical data from University\u00a0of California San Diego School of Medicine offers proof-of-principle\u00a0for combination immunotherapy that suppresses tumor growth in the\u00a0liver.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers with UC\u00a0San Diego Moores Cancer Center\u00a0are reporting\u00a0that combining two reagents \u2014 a\u00a0synthetic double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid\u00a0(polyIC) with a programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) antibody \u2014 was\u00a0effective at stopping the progression of\u00a0hepatocellular carcinoma\u00a0(HCC), with complete tumor remission and tumor-free survival observed\u00a0in some\u00a0mouse models.<\/p>\n<p>This data led\u00a0them\u00a0to believe that developing a liver cancer prevention strategy is\u00a0possible by boosting innate immunity, which\u00a0can benefit a large\u00a0population of chronic liver diseases in patients who are at high risk\u00a0for liver cancer\u00a0development.
