{"id":271588,"date":"2017-07-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-07-01T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/celebrate-4th-of-july-at-the-bird-rock-parade\/"},"modified":"2017-07-01T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2017-07-01T07:00:00","slug":"celebrate-4th-of-july-at-the-bird-rock-parade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/celebrate-4th-of-july-at-the-bird-rock-parade\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrate 4th of July at the Bird Rock parade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The annual iconic, homespun Bird Rock 4th\u00a0of July Parade will roll out for the 38th\u00a0time this year on Tuesday, July 4.<br \/>\n&#8220;Bring your Hawaiian shirt and let\u2019s hula,&#8221; said Scott Murfey of San Diego-based Murfey Co., which continues to coordinate and sponsor the patriotic event.<br \/>\nThe theme this year is the South Pacific-inspired &#8220;Tiki Time.&#8221;<br \/>\nThis event started out as \u2014 and remains \u2014 a neighborhood-centric mom-and-pop festivity.<br \/>\nRegistration and float entry is at Beaumont Avenue and Camino de la Costa at 9:15 a.m. on the 4th.\u00a0A shotgun parade follows at 10 a.m. Trophies will be awarded to the best floats and parade participants.<br \/>\nFor decades, the La Jolla community has gathered alongside neighbors, family, and friends on the 4th\u00a0of July to enjoy the Bird Rock Parade down Beaumont Street. With hundreds of bikes and small floats flooding the\u00a0streets, this quintessential &#8220;small town&#8221; celebration has spanned generations of La Jollans.<br \/>\nNow in its 38th\u00a0year, the Murfey family is once again at the heart of the parade with brothers, Scott and Russ, working to coordinate all of\u00a0this year\u2019s activities.<br \/>\n&#8220;The 4th\u00a0of July parade is a great opportunity to connect with old friends, families and neighbors,&#8221; said Russ Murfey. &#8220;For us, there is the obvious\u00a0personal connection to the parade. But more importantly, it is what it means\u00a0to the community as a whole.&#8221;\u00a0<br \/>\nBegun\u00a0in 1980 by Barbara and Buddy Murfey\u00a0\u2013 Scott and Russ\u2019 parents \u2013\u00a0alongside other Bird Rock parents, the parade initially consisted of just a few Bird Rock families and has grown ever since.<br \/>\nThis year, in addition to the parade, there will be plenty of food and activities including carnival games and photo booths at the end of the parade route in the Methodist Church parking lot, 6063 La Jolla Blvd.<br \/>\nDespite moving full steam ahead, volunteers and donations are still needed.
