This event, hosted\u00a0by\u00a0the local charity Foundation for Animal Care and Education (FACE),\u00a0was designed to recognize local &#8220;animaltarians,&#8221;\u00a0or San Diego\u00a0organizations and individuals that are invested and dedicated to the\u00a0welfare of animals in the\u00a0community.<br \/><\/span><span><br \/><\/span><span>Ever\u00a0since its inception in 2006, FACE has raised funds year round to end\u00a0economic euthanasia and preserve and\u00a0enhance the quality of life of\u00a0local pets. Economic euthanasia happens when pet owners cannot afford\u00a0the cost of\u00a0treatment needed at the time of a sudden medical\u00a0condition, and the animal is put to sleep.<br \/><\/span><span><br \/><\/span><span>&#8220;When\u00a0a pet needs treatment, most vet hospitals don\u2019t start treatment\u00a0unless the pet parents can pay the full cost. If\u00a0the pet parent can\u2019t\u00a0come up with the money, the more humane thing to do, versus leaving\u00a0the pet untreated, is to\u00a0euthanize that animal. Specifically, that\u2019s\u00a0what we\u2019re trying to prevent because so many issues are treatable,&#8221;\u00a0explains\u00a0FACE Executive Director Danae Davis.<br \/><\/span><span><br \/><\/span><span>After\u00a013 years as a local charity, FACE has partnered with over 165\u00a0veterinary hospitals in San Diego to end\u00a0economic euthanasia.\u00a0Currently, the foundation is helping save more than one life per day.<br \/><\/span><span><br \/><\/span><span>This\u00a0year marks FACE\u2019s second year hosting the Animaltarian Awards. The\u00a0event will also recognize Loving Hands\u00a0Veterinary Services, and local\u00a0KUSI TV personality and animal advocate Sandie Lampe, in addition to\u00a0their\u00a0recognition of the La Jolla Veterinary Hospital.<br \/><\/span><span><br \/><\/span><span>&#8220;It\u2019s\u00a0a wonderful accolade for our team to share with each other,&#8221; says\u00a0La Jolla Vet Hospital\u2019s director, Stephanie\u00a0Coolidge. &#8220;San Diego\u00a0has been voted the most pet-friendly city in the country multiple\u00a0times, so it\u2019s really\u00a0extraordinary to be chosen for an award in an\u00a0industry where there are many people who deserve this award.&#8221;<br \/><\/span><span><br \/><\/span><span>&#8220;Our\u00a0two top core values are best veterinary medicine possible and the\u00a0highest hospitality environment,&#8221; explains\u00a0Coolidge. &#8220;We always\u00a0believe that animal welfare is a lifestyle. Improving animal welfare\u00a0as a whole and educating\u00a0about ways to do that is our ethical and\u00a0moral responsibility as a vet hospital.&#8221;<br \/><\/span><span><br \/><\/span><span>The\u00a0La Jolla Vet Hospital has partnered with FACE for years to improve\u00a0and save the lives of pets. Davis explains,\u00a0&#8220;La Jolla Vet\u00a0Hospital\u2019s team is not only passionate about helping pets and pet\u00a0owners in the community, but they also\u00a0help bridge the gap for pet\u00a0parents who struggle to afford veterinary care for their pets.\u00a0They\u2019re very dedicated to\u00a0being a good resource for pet owners in\u00a0need.&#8221;<br \/><\/span><span><br \/><\/span><span>FACE\u2019s\u00a0Animaltarian Awards will be held on Sept. 29 in a private La Jolla\u00a0cliffside\u00a0estate.
