?Pacific Beach Town Council (PBTC) was told in July they and the entire community ought to begin planning immediately for the Mission Bay Gateway Project, now that the De Anza Cove lawsuit has finally been\u00a0settled and mobile home owners there will be moving out.\u00a0?That was the message delivered by Scott Chipman, a longtime Pacific\u00a0Beach Planning Group (PBPG) member and civic activist, who has been\u00a0lobbying for years to get public attention redirected back to the long-term redevelopment project.\u00a0?The Mission Bay Gateway Project seeks to connect and enhance existing\u00a0facilities, while also expanding and protecting the Mission Bay\u00a0marshlands and bird sanctuaries. Bike paths and parks could be\u00a0extended, and new amenities like pools, sports fields, and a\u00a0restaurant could be added for the community and visitors to enjoy.
\nThe\u00a0intended result would be creation of an environmental, recreational\u00a0and educational destination at the heart of Mission Bay.\u00a0?”I\u2019ve gotten tired and frustrated waiting for the city to do something\u00a0about it (project),” said Chipman noting he lives near the area, which\u00a0he noted is a link to “the important educational and recreational\u00a0amenities and natural environment of Mission Bay.”\u00a0?Chipman noted the De Anza peninsula is designated as a “special study\u00a0area” within the Mission Bay Master Plan, which is being updated.\u00a0?”We don\u2019t know what we\u2019re going to do there,” said Chipman adding,\u00a0“We\u2019re going to have to do something about that in the future. And\u00a0that future is long overdue.”\u00a0?Chipman said one possible improvement could be to enhance marshland in\u00a0the area, which could help cleanse runoff from Rose Creek.\u00a0?”We could expand marshland by 50 acres, which could improve water\u00a0quality by about 50 percent from the Rose Creek outfall, which brings\u00a0unpurified pollution and sediment into Mission Bay,” Chipman said,\u00a0adding, “We also have the ability to have a nature interpretive center.”\u00a0?Chipman added other public improvements connected with the project\u00a0could include adding parking, a new aquatic center with an Olympic-size pool and\/or creating more bike and walking paths, as well as\u00a0enhancing tennis and campground facilities \u2014 even building a public\u00a0amphitheater \u2014 might all be possible.\u00a0?”Right now PB doesn\u2019t have its own pool and needs more recreation\u00a0space,” Chipman said, adding area bike paths are also presently not\u00a0connected.\u00a0?”Those connections are available if we plan properly,” he said.\u00a0?The community activist said he\u2019s been campaigning to begin vetting\u00a0alternative uses for the Mission Bay Gateway Master Plan, having\u00a0addressed thousands of people in community groups for the past five\u00a0years.\u00a0?”People love the idea and say they want to get more involved,” he added.\u00a0?Chipman counseled that the city “doesn\u2019t just need to study the De\u00a0Anza Peninsula. We need a comprehensive plan for the entire area.”\u00a0?From the audience, Paula Ferraco asked if community garden space\u00a0could be provided in an updated master plan.\u00a0?”I see no reason why not,” answered Chipman.\u00a0
