{"id":268104,"date":"2015-08-27T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-08-27T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/new-teachers-programs-at-mission-bay-cluster-new-school-year-begins-sept-8\/"},"modified":"2015-08-27T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2015-08-27T07:00:00","slug":"new-teachers-programs-at-mission-bay-cluster-new-school-year-begins-sept-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/new-teachers-programs-at-mission-bay-cluster-new-school-year-begins-sept-8\/","title":{"rendered":"New teachers, programs at Mission Bay Cluster; new school year begins Sept. 8"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 2015-16 school year for Mission Bay Cluster\u2019s six schools \u2013 Barnard Asia Pacific Language Academy, Crown Point, Mission Bay High, Pacific Beach Elementary, Pacific Beach Middle and Kate Sessions \u2013 looks promising.<br \/>\n&#8220;Mission Bay High School (MBHS) is excited for the upcoming school year,&#8221; said second-year principal Ernest Remillard at the school, located at 2475 Grand Ave. &#8220;Obviously the biggest news is Friday the 28th will mark the first night football game at MBHS, with the varsity game against rival West Hills starting at 6 p.m.&#8221;<br \/>\nRemillard introduced new engineering teacher Alex Cannon, whom he described as &#8220;amazing.&#8221; He noted Cannon &#8220;is interested in getting the community involved in the projects he has running in his class. Alex has some ideas for some community connection.&#8221;<br \/>\nMargaret Joseph, principal at Kate Sessions Elementary School at 2150 Beryl St., was similarly upbeat.<br \/>\n&#8220;In a few days, the hallways and playgrounds will be buzzing with the sounds of students excited for a new school year at Sessions,&#8221; she said.\u00a0&#8220;They should be excited \u2013 we have lots of wonderful things planned for them this school year.&#8221;<br \/>\nOfficials at Crown Point Junior Music Academy (CPJMA), at 4033 Ingraham St., are also looking forward to hitting the ground running this year.<br \/>\nThe elementary school is hosting a Back to School Resource Fair open to the public from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3.<br \/>\nAt the school fair, parents can learn about the school\u2019s &#8220;music programs, make new friends, shop vendor booths and enjoy student performances and live entertainment,&#8221; said school assistant Catalina Valenzuela.<br \/>\nPBMS and MBHS reps will also have their orientation in Crown Point\u2019s library during the same hours.<br \/>\nNew this year, CPJMA has become Partners in Education with the La Jolla Music Society, said Valenzuela.<br \/>\n&#8220;The education manager from the La Jolla Music Society and CPJMA principal Bartolini will be working together to build student curriculum, bring professional performances to CPJMA and provide Professional Development for Teachers,&#8221; noted Valenzuela.<br \/>\nRemillard added the high school will also be &#8220;growing our Game Design pathway this year. Mr. Corbin has added a new more advanced course to the sequence.<br \/>\n&#8220;Our IB program continues to grow and flourish,&#8221; added Remillard. &#8220;We had 18 students receive the full International Baccalaureate Diploma last school year. These students completed all of the required course work, including extended essay, Community Action and Service (CAS) requirement, and passed college-level exams.&#8221;<br \/>\nRemillard noted that &#8220;more than half of last year\u2019s juniors and seniors complete IB and Advanced Placement course work.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe high school principal said he is &#8220;looking forward to see the accomplishments of our kids in the classroom, \u00a0participating in afterschool programs and during athletic competitions.&#8221;<br \/>\nSessions principal Joseph said her school has added a new kindergarten teacher this year, Nancy Peters.\u00a0<br \/>\n&#8220;She is an experienced teacher coming to us from Nye Elementary School,&#8221; Joseph said. &#8220;Luckily, our entire staff is returning to provide exemplary instruction to all students in grades TK-5.&#8221;<br \/>\nJoseph added all Sessions classroom teachers will implement the new writing curriculum created by Lucy Calkins.\u00a0<br \/>\n&#8220;Teachers attended training during the summer in order to best facilitate the instructional needs for students,&#8221; she said.\u00a0&#8220;This new writing curriculum is grounded in the workshop model, which allows students to fully engage in writing, connect with mentor texts, and collaborate with others.&#8221;<br \/>\nJoseph added both of the school\u2019s reading and writing programs will &#8220;enhance our International Baccalaureate focus.&#8221;\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0New student orientation for Sessions transitional kindergarten (TK) and kindergarten students will be at 9 a.m. Sept. 4, while new students in grades 1-5 will have their new student orientation at 11 a.m. on the same day.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nSafety Sidebar<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nBack-to-School Safety Reminders<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00b7\u00a0 Never let children under age 10 cross the street alone. Teach children to recognize and obey traffic signals and pavement markings while choosing the safest route between home and school and practice walking it.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Cross streets only in crosswalks; never enter streets from between parked cars or from behind shrubbery.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0Use the same route every day and avoid shortcuts.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0Children shouldn\u2019t speak to strangers; if a stranger approaches, have them tell a trusted adult such as a parent or teacher.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0Arrive at the bus stop at least\u00a010 minutes before the scheduled arrival of the bus.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before getting on or out.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Do not shout or distract the driver.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Do not walk in the driver&#8217;s &#8220;blind spot&#8221; &#8212; the area from the front of the bus to about 12 feet in front of the bus.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0Regarding bicycles, wear a helmet.
