In girls volleyball play, head coach Steve Upp\u2019s squad comes into action one week after winning the Buccaneer Bash Tournament. Mission Bay (14-5 overall, 0-2 Eastern League) topped Maranatha Christian in a three-set final (25-22, 21-25, 15-12) to claim the title. Freshman Maya Jessee joined the varsity in the last week, making three freshmen on the squad. Mission Bay is away this week with tough league matches versus Coronado and Patrick Henry, respectively. “We continue to improve and are competing for every match,” Upp stated. \nThe Bucs, under head coach Nikki Caufield, completed their third league match last week against a strong Coronado squad.
\n“We are currently 0-3 in a tough league filled with higher division teams,” Caufield said. “Our young squad is really close to winning matches, as we are typically only a couple of points away from winning.\u00a0In the matchup against Coronado, 8 of our 10 games were decided by three points or less.”\u00a0 The squad this year is comprised of a senior, two juniors, four sophomores and three freshmen, generally playing squads dominated almost exclusively by juniors and seniors.\u00a0 The Bucs have a bye this week before they play Saints on Oct. 12.\u00a0 Caufield said of the team’s progress: “The way the league play works out for beach, it ends up seeding teams for the playoffs between Open, Division I and Division II.\u00a0As our younger players are steadily progressing, we are hopeful that they’ll get the experience playing higher-level opponents now in preparation for the playoffs.” Field hockey Head coach Kris Auer\u2019s squad comes into action this week at 3-3.
\nThe Bucs are being led by Emily Crissman and Clara Sandoval, a pair of juniors who are scoring goals.
\n“The team\u2019s last game (Valhalla), was a situation where everything clicked,” Auer commented. “We scored on our short corners, our passing was crisp, and the movement of the ball was exceptional.” Girls tennis Head coach Trong Tong\u2019s team entered play this week at 5-4 overall (5-2 league).
\nAccording to Tong, top players to date include McKenna Mountain (No. 1 singles), along with the No. 1 doubles duo of Amanda Edmunds and Rosina Valia.
\n“After going on a five-game winning streak that started four weeks ago, we’ve come back down to earth a little bit as we lost our last two just last week,” Tong stated. “As a few of our players have been plagued by illness and injury as of late, we’re still striving to get back on track and finish the season strongly.\u00a0Hopefully, we’ll shake off the injury bug real soon, or else it will be quite an uphill climb since we have a smaller team this season.”<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
