UCSD receives record breaking $213 million in private support In the fiscal year 2015-16, UCSD received nearly 46,000 gifts totaling $212.9 million to help ensure the university\u2019s position as an academic and research powerhouse. UCSD is ranked as one of the top 15 universities in the world and received a 20 percent increase in private support over the preceding year. As of June 30, 2016, the total combined endowment for the campus is $1.177 billion which is managed by the UCSD Foundation and the UC Regents. The largest beneficiary of private funding on campus was health sciences, with donors designating a total of $93.3 million. Gary and Mary West provided $11.8 million to create a state-of-the-art senior emergency care unit to be housed within the Emergency Department at the future Jacobs Medical Center. \nFor the past three years, Joy Frieman has been searching to find a suitable way to honor her husband, Edward A. Frieman, former director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the UCSD. A prominent national advisor to the government on issues of vital importance to defense, energy and science policy, he died in April 2013 at age 87. Mrs. Frieman decided that endowing a faculty chair and two fellowships was the most appropriate way to carry forward her late husband\u2019s legacy of leadership in science. Her recent gift of $2.5 million to UCSD includes $1.5 million to establish the\u00a0Edward A. Frieman Endowed Presidential Chair in Climate Sustainability. The endowed faculty chair qualifies for a $500,000 Presidential match through the UC Presidential Chair initiative, totaling $2 million in support for the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Presidential chair.
