\n\u2022 Mission Bay High School\u2019s annual Talent Show\u00a0will be held\u00a0Friday, Feb. 21 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.\u00a0in the MBHS auditorium. There will be cash prizes and celebrity judges, including Jen Smith, national longboard champion; Nicki Carano, jazz dance instructor and vocalist\/drummer for several local bands; Dan O\u2019Hara, owner of Solid Surf Boards and shaper for South Coast; and Jack “Mr. Frostie” Conca. These judges will cast their votes for the most original, polished and entertaining acts. Come and see the crazy talented students of Mission Bay High. Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased in advance in the school office or at the door on the night of the event. \n\u2022 A trip to China for MBHS students takes place from\u00a0July 15 to Aug. 1. Spend up to two weeks in China living, studying and exploring a culture different from your own. Activities will include learning Chinese in a Mandarin classroom, exposure into Chinese lifestyle and touring renowned local tourist attractions. \n\u2022 Top musicians and artists from China performed for a packed house at Pacific Beach Middle International Baccalaureate on Feb. 13. In the U.S. for the Huain Cup Chinese International Instrument Competition \u2014 and through the sponsorship and coordination from Hanban Organization in China \u2014 these talented artists in all aspects of the musical fields arrived in San Diego after their competition for the only show in the U.S.\u00a0“I can\u2019t tell you how honored and excited we at Pacific Beach Middle International Baccalaureate feel about this special engagement brought to us by the Confucius Institute at San Diego State University, our San Diego Unified School District partner in education,” said Ernie Remillard, principal at the award-winning middle school. “We are so proud to offer cultural events to our staff and students as we continue to grow our new Mandarin Chinese course.” Welcoming and recognizing the visiting artists, as well as dignitaries and officials from China, were San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts and San Diego Unified School District board member Scott Barnett, who presented the guests with proclamations from the city and district. \nAs an International Baccalaureate school, the mission of Kate Sessions Elementary School is to\u00a0develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.\u00a0It makes sense that students at Kate Sessions participated in the national Great Kindness Challenge from\u00a0Jan. 27 through Feb. 1. \n\u2022 On Feb. 7, Crown Point Junior Music Academy (CPJMA) celebrated the school\u2019s new look on Ingraham Street. Matthew Cavanagh, a local Pacific Beach mural artist, created an amazing “Music Opens Minds” mural for the school and its community. To CPJMA, this mural represents the hard work and dedication parents, staff and the community have put forth in not only fighting to keep the school open, but also in supporting the various music programs CPJMA has to offer. Pacific Beach Middle School string students, Pacific Beach Middle School music director John O\u2019Donnell and PBMS principal Ernest Remillard, partnered with CPJMA\u2019s Steve Luch and his string students in this important celebration as both schools put on a performance for all students and families. Also in attendance was VAPA director Mark Nicholson and Deputy Superintendent of Business Support Services Phillip Stover. “This was such a great event to be a part of. I enjoyed all the great compliments parents, staff and students had to say about my work,” said Cavanagh. “During the time I was painting the mural, a lot of cars honked. Pedestrians passing by gave me the thumbs-up and told me what a great job I was doing. I enjoyed helping Crown Point.”
\n\u2022 Congratulations to CPJMA\u2019s string students Luna Wiederkehr, Lily Adaska and Joshua Nguyen for being selected to the 2014 SDUSD Elementary Honor Orchestra. They will perform with the SDUSD Elementary Honor Orchestra on\u00a0Friday, March 21.\u00a0 Luna and Lily are the youngest students\u00a0to\u00a0perform\u00a0and all three students will represent\u00a0CPJMA\u00a0for the second consecutive year. \nVision 20\/20 meeting\u00a0for District C is\u00a0set to take place\u00a0Feb. 24 from 7 to 9 p.m.\u00a0in the MBHS auditorium.\u00a0Hosted by Superintendent Cindy Marten, the meeting will involve providing input regarding what the Mission Bay Cluster of schools need to support its goals. \u00a0Other clusters will be in attendance, including La Jolla, Kearny and Point Loma, so come and share your priorities to keep the Mission Bay Cluster of schools strong. \n\u2022 The Taste of North PB Art & Restaurant Walk is right around the corner on Wednesday, March 12 from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for kids (5-10 years) and can be purchased at Pacific Beach Elementary School, Pacific Beach Middle School and Mission Bay High School. The walk features more than 18 restaurants, displays of artwork by local students and music by the MBHS Preservationists, PBE musicians and local duet Mad Colony.
