The San Diego Foundation on April 9 announced $1 million in additional rapid response grants to local nonprofit organizations providing food security and financial assistance to seniors, children, restaurant workers and other vulnerable populations through the San Diego COVID-19 Community Response Fund.  <\/span><\/p>\n

To date, the <\/span><\/span>F<\/span><\/span>und has granted $2.7 million to San Diego organizations working on the frontline to <\/span><\/span>support individuals, families and communities impacted by the coronavirus outbreak.  <\/span><\/p>\n

Thanks to the generosity of <\/span><\/span>more than 1,946 individuals, companies, foundations and donors at The San Diego Foundation, the San Diego COVID-19 Community Response Fund has raised $8.3 million and in one week earned a $500,000 match from the Halicioglu Family Foundation to support San Diegans in need.  <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Recent donations<\/span><\/span> also include $200,000 from Genentech, $150,000 from Wells Fargo and $100,000 from the Colonel Frank C. Wood Memorial Fund at The San Diego Foundation.  <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The $1 million in additional grant funding <\/span><\/span>includes $330,000 to San Diego Hunger Coalition, $300,000 of which will go immediately to support school districts through the Hunger Free Kids COVID Response Initiative, a partnership between the Coalition and other regional leaders and organizations dedicated to providing food assistance for San Diegans in times of need.  <\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span><\/span>ogether with partners in education, hunger relief, public health, government and philanthropy, the Hunger Free Kids COVID Response Initiative will leverage the San Diego COVID-19 Community Response Fund grant with existing government-funded nutrition programs to meet the increased need for food assistance among San Diego children and to provide safe working environments for staff and volunteers.  <\/span><\/p>\n

The grant <\/span><\/span>to the San Diego Hunger Coalition is made possible thanks to the Bosch Milk Fund at The San Diego Foundation, a donor-advised fund created by the late philanthropist Anita Bosch to provide meal assistance to San Diego school children who might be otherwise undernourished.  <\/span><\/p>\n

To<\/span><\/span> support the Hunger Free Kids COVID Response Initiative and increase the capacity and resources available for San Diego County school districts to provide safe, curbside meal assistance to students who, prior to COVID-19, relied on school meal programs for daily meals.  <\/span><\/p>\n

Restaurant Works Relief Initiative (via Mission Edge San Diego) – $250,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span><\/span>hrough a partnership with Cohn Restaurant Group, to provide financial assistance to restaurant employees affected by layoffs and reduced working hours. <\/span><\/p>\n

Meals on Wheels – $150,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To<\/span><\/span> help meet the increased demand from quarantined seniors who rely on food assistance deliveries by volunteers for food, social connection and wellness checks.  <\/span><\/p>\n

Father Joe’s Village – $60,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To support<\/span><\/span> the needs of San Diegans experiencing homelessness during the COVID-19 crisis, including health care, shelter, food and more. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

American Red Cross – $60,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To<\/span><\/span> provide disaster relief for San Diegans in need, as well as ensure local hospitals continue to have the blood supply they need to treat patients. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Serving Seniors – $50,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To<\/span><\/span> expand the number of meals that are provided to food insecure and quarantined seniors during this crisis. <\/span><\/p>\n

ElderHelp<\/span><\/strong><\/span> <\/span>of San Diego – $50,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To<\/span><\/span> support seniors in need, especially those who are isolated or home bound with limited access to food, medical services and family support. <\/span><\/p>\n

2-1-1 San Diego – $50,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To<\/span><\/span> provide flexible resources to the 2-1-1 San Diego and its call center, which is helping tens of thousands of San Diegans find the services and support they need.   <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Grantmaking<\/span><\/span> from the San Diego COVID-19 Community Response Fund focuses on food security; other essential living expenses; emergent needs; and rent and utility payment support. The fund will also provide interest-free loans for nonprofit organizations to provide business and community service continuity. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The San Diego Foundation is part of a national movement of more than <\/span><\/span>300 community foundations that have mobilized over $400 million to aid in the COVID-19 public health and economic crisis through response funds. Individual donations are bolstered by San Diego corporations and numerous fondos asesorados por donantes<\/span><\/span><\/a> <\/span>at The San Diego Foundation that have contributed to the <\/span><\/span>San Diego COVID-19 Response Fund. <\/span><\/p>\n
