{"id":265566,"date":"2014-03-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-03-22T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/la-valencia-puts-rich-photographic-history-of-celebs-on-exhibit\/"},"modified":"2014-03-22T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2014-03-22T07:00:00","slug":"la-valencia-puts-rich-photographic-history-of-celebs-on-exhibit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/la-valencia-puts-rich-photographic-history-of-celebs-on-exhibit\/","title":{"rendered":"La Valencia puts rich photographic history of celebs on exhibit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>La Valencia Hotel is exhibiting the work of noted New York photojournalist Brian Hamill throughout &#8220;The Pink Lady&#8221; from now until July 11.<br \/>\nHamill\u2019s iconic black-and white images of celebrities include John Lennon, Robert De Niro, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Muhammad Ali, Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Warren Beatty, Jackie Gleason and John Huston.<br \/>\nThey are on display adjacent to the hotel\u2019s lobby and cascading down walls of the Sevilla Wing staircase.<br \/>\nAll of the framed pieces on display are fine-art limited-edition prints available for purchase through the hotel\u2019s concierge.<br \/>\nFor the last 45 years, Hamill has photographed myriad subjects \u2014 everything\u00a0 from rock \u2019n\u2019 roll to politics to entertainment and sports.<br \/>\nHis career began in the mid-1960s, when he worked as an assistant to several top fashion photographers. He first gained recognition for his work photographing boxing. \u00a0<br \/>\nHe was later sent to Northern Ireland in 1972 to cover the country\u2019s violent, war-like conflict, The Troubles, for The New York Times Magazine.\u00a0About that time, he also began working as a unit still photographer on movie sets, eventually working on over 75 films, including 26 Woody Allen movies.\u00a0 In 1995, he was honored to have his photography work exhibited in a one-man show at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts &#038; Sciences.\u00a0<br \/>\nIn an interview with La Jolla Village News, Hamill talked about his photographic career and what\u2019s inspired his work.<br \/>\n&#8220;I\u2019m lucky to be in La Valencia, it\u2019s a great hotel and the people that run it are really nice,&#8221; said Hamill noting he and the hotel are &#8220;a good partnership.&#8221;<br \/>\nNoting La V\u2019s 52 images, including many celebrities, are just a sampling of his work over the years, Hamill pointed out his subjects, alive and dead, have stood &#8220;the test of time.&#8221;<br \/>\nA boxer when he was young, Hamill was drawn to photographing Muhammed Ali and the man he beat for the heavyweight title, Sonny Liston as well as famed middleweight &#8220;Sugar&#8221; Ray Robinson.<br \/>\nHamill\u2019s La V exhibit also includes modern-era stars like Queen Latifah and Robert Downey, Jr.<br \/>\nAsked if there was a Hollywood star today he hasn\u2019t photographed, but would like to, Hamill replied, &#8220;Jennifer Lawrence. I find her to be unpretentious and sexy. Nothing fake about her. Not afraid to be honest.&#8221;<br \/>\nHollywood greats Hamill wished he\u2019d photographed include Marlon Brando, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart and Steve McQueen.<br \/>\nHamill\u2019s partial to black-and-white photography because &#8220;you can dream more, fantasize more&#8221; with it like it has &#8220;an absence of reality,&#8221; whereas\u00a0 color is &#8220;so literal.&#8221;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nOf Hamill, celebrities have said:<br \/>\n&#8220;He\u2019s got eyes in the back of his head. \u2026 He\u2019s got soul. \u2026 Irish to the marrow. \u2026 Hamill is a mug who takes pretty pictures. He can compose, he can light, and he\u2019s to the point.&#8221; \u2014 Woody Allen<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n&#8220;Still photography on movie sets requires great skill.\u00a0 To capture actors in performance, unobtrusively and poignantly, is no easy task.\u00a0 But the results can be magnificent archives of the process.\u00a0 Brian Hamill is one of the best, perhaps THE best, the movies have ever known.&#8221; \u2013 Alec Baldwin<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n&#8220;I\u2019ve known Brian a long time. In fact, it\u2019s been so long, I forget where we first met! We hung out with mutual friends. I still run into him once in a while.
