So much for a close battle between neighboring football powers last Saturday night in La Jolla.
The Bishop’s School ran its record to a 2-0 with a 55-7 thumping of neighboring La Jolla Country Day School.
Bishop’s back Michael Strauss led the effort with 12 carries for 137 yards and three TDs. Mike P. Jensen added four carries for 107 yards and a TD, while Jacob Kelly rushed 12 times for 78 yards and a score.
Bishop’s QB Tommy Wornham went 9-of-14 for 119 yards and two TDs on the night. Tim Costello hauled in four of those passes for 48 yards and a score, with Saron Hood adding a TD reception.
On defense, Rey Felix had two sacks and a fumble recovery for the Knights, who had opened the season in Maui with a 44-2 victory.
“I’m very proud of the way our players played,” Bishop’s head coach Mike David said. “Our offensive and defensive lines did an incredible job all night long. I was impressed by the focus of our team during practice getting ready for this game.”
Bishop’s returns to action Friday night when it hosts Prep Federal at La Jolla High at 7 p.m.
For LJCD, head coach Jeff Hutzler summed it up best, noting, “The old football axiom, speed kills, was proven again Saturday night as a very quick Bishop’s team blew by the Torreys.”
One of the lone LJCD highlights was QB Derek Hatfield, who went 9-for-17 passing for 96 yards and a TD (seven yards).
Senior receiver Connor Grooms led all Torrey receivers with 56 yards on three catches.
Sophomore Connor Gerhart also caught three balls for a total of 37 yards and a TD.
Cody Maxwell racked up 13 tackles (three solos) from his linebacker position, with Mark Hannum adding eight tackles.
The JV Torreys battled to a 14-14 tie with Bishop’s.
LJCD has another tough one this week, as it will face a Francis Parker team that has been to the CIF Division V championship game the past two years, winning the championship in 2005.
