{"id":260017,"date":"2017-11-03T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-11-03T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/san-diego-community-newspaper-group-earns-14-san-diego-press-club-awards-3\/"},"modified":"2017-11-03T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2017-11-03T07:00:00","slug":"san-diego-community-newspaper-group-earns-14-san-diego-press-club-awards-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/san-diego-community-newspaper-group-earns-14-san-diego-press-club-awards-3\/","title":{"rendered":"San Diego Community Newspaper Group earns 14 San Diego Press Club awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>San Diego Community Newspaper Group earns 14 San Diego Press Club awards<br \/>\nSan Diego Community Newspaper Group recently brought home several awards from the 44th annual San Diego Press Club&#8217;s Excellence in Journalism Awards, which was held on Oct. 24 at the Joe and Vi Jacobs Center.<br \/>\nPeninsula Beacon\u00a0reporter\u00a0Scott Hopkins received first place in the category of Non-Daily Newspapers, Breaking News for his article titled &#8220;Knife-wielding man subdued.&#8221;<br \/>\nSan Diego Community Newspaper Group managing editor Thomas Melville earned first place in the Non-Daily Newspapers, Headlines category.<br \/>\nLa Jolla Village News\u00a0editor Blake Bunch won first in the category of Non-Daily Newspapers, Visual\/Fine Art Reporting, for his story &#8220;Pop art meets high performance surf design.&#8221;<br \/>\nIn the open category Photography, Breaking News, Hopkins won first for his shot of a distraught man in Point Loma. Melville took second in the open category Photography, Feature \u2013 Serious Subject, for his &#8220;Hope for the Homeless&#8221; photo. He earned two third place awards in the open Photography category for the feature photo &#8220;Jetty cats&#8221; and the sports photo of the Red Bull Air Race in the Beach &#038; Bay Press. Bunch earned a second place in the category of Non-Daily Newspapers, Breaking News Reporting, for the story &#8220;UTC shooting.&#8221; Bunch also took second in the Non-Daily Newspapers, Health &#038; Medicine category for the story &#8220;Salk scientists\u2019 breakthrough.&#8221;<br \/>\nHopkins earned a second place in the category of Non-Daily Newspapers, Feature \u2013 Serious Subject, for his story on the Point Loma High robotics team. He also took second in the category of Non-Daily Newspapers, Humor, with the story &#8220;Nude nautical nymph nabbed on Shelter Island.&#8221; Hopkins added a third place in the category of Non-Daily Newspapers, Visual\/Fine Art Reporting, for the story on a Point Loma High grad\u2019s photo exhibit. Hopkins also had a second place in the category of Non-Daily Newspapers, Sports for the story on a Point Loma Pee Wee football team.\u00a0<br \/>\nMelville took third in the category of Non-Daily Newspapers, Front Page Design, for the Peninsula Beacon.
