{"id":259392,"date":"2014-06-20T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-06-20T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/plhs-lauds-baseball-squad-for-impressive-turnaround-in-2014\/"},"modified":"2014-06-20T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2014-06-20T07:00:00","slug":"plhs-lauds-baseball-squad-for-impressive-turnaround-in-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/plhs-lauds-baseball-squad-for-impressive-turnaround-in-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"PLHS lauds baseball squad for impressive turnaround in 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Significant team improvements, which led to a successful season, were celebrated June 9 as Pointer baseball players and families gathered one last time for this year\u2019s team\u2019s banquet.<br \/>\nBooster club president Peter Urbon and head coach Joe Radovich elaborated on the program\u2019s growth to the applause of more than 160 players and families at the Bali Hai Resort restaurant.<br \/>\nThe Pointers finished second in the Western League (7-5, 12-13-1 overall) under first-year boss Radovich, playing stronger as the season continued. They ended the season with a six-game win streak before being denied a CIF playoff spot.<br \/>\nPlayers were introduced by assistant coaches Steve Carpenter, David Wells and Kyle Harvey.<br \/>\nA group of 10 seniors (from a roster of 19 players) received Pointer jerseys with nameplates on the back as mementos of their prep careers. They include Chance Jiminez, Lucas Stauderman, Joe Da Luz, Keegan Otsuka, Cameron Yackly, Jake Sanderson, Jordan\u00a0Goulet, Joaquin Avalos, James Klueber and Collin Clack.<br \/>\nTop batting average went to junior Jayson Pappas, who hit .375 in an injury-shortened season. He was followed by junior Cole Lemmel (.373), Jiminez (.337) and Da Luz at .321.<br \/>\nLemmel also led in hits (31), with Jiminez (29), Yackly and Da Luz (27) and Goulet following with 24.<br \/>\nLemmel also led the team with 16 runs batted in, while Pappas (14) and Da Luz (10) followed.<br \/>\nPappas\u2019 slugging percentage of .525 was tops for the Pointers and second-best in the league, with Lemmel (.469) closest.<br \/>\nIn the field, first baseman Lawrence Perez, a junior, made just one error all season, giving him a Western League best .992 fielding percentage. Catcher Clack recorded a .967, while outfielders Lemmel and Goulet each recorded only two miscues.<br \/>\nOn the mound, Klueber was second among all Western League pitchers with a 1.29 earned-run average, while Ryan Arnold, a junior, was second with 44 batters struck out, followed by Da Luz (34) and Klueber with 33. Klueber also held opposing batters to a .138 batting average, with Da Luz at .194.<br \/>\nFirst Team All-Western League honors went to infielder Jiminez and pitcher Klueber. Da Luz was named to the second team, with Lemmel, Arnold and Yackly receiving honorable mention nods.<br \/>\nTeam awards went to Klueber (most valuable player) and Da Luz (team captain).\u00a0<br \/>\nThe Delgado Award, named for longtime Pointer coach Mike Delgado, went to Klueber and Da Luz, exemplifying their unselfish dedication, hard work and continuous desire to learn and improve their skills.<br \/>\nThe Harvey Award, named for longtime Pointer booster Margaret Harvey went to Otsuka for his character and consistent daily effort.<br \/>\nThe junior-varsity team of 18 players named Philip Huber MVP and Cheyne VanArsdale captain. Coaches were Delgado and Cody Harvey.<br \/>\nCoaches Jeff Solis, Steve Ronge and Andy Martin also honored their roster of 15 players. EXTRA INNINGS<br \/>\n\u2022 Scraping of David Wells Field at Dana Middle School has already begun as part of a complete renovation of the facility to be completed in two phases. The new field will have an artificial turf surface to eliminate watering, mowing and other maintenance costs.\u00a0<br \/>\n\u2022 Other first-phase features of the new facility include a new scoreboard in right field, outfield fencing from left center to right-center fields, fenced-off bullpen for visitors in left field, a new bullpen for Pointers in right field and new turf in existing batting cages.<br \/>\n\u2022 Second-phase improvements will include addition of stadium-style seating behind home plate, including a 16-foot-by-20-foot scorekeeping\/coaches\u2019 office building, steel roofing over existing batting cages, new storage bins, an accessible ramp for disabled to lower seating levels and lowering of current ground-level dugout floors with new roofing.<br \/>\n\u2022 No night lighting will be added.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Significant team improvements, which led to a successful season, were celebrated June 9 as Pointer baseball players and families gathered one last time for this year\u2019s team\u2019s banquet.
