GRADUATING MFA PLAYWRIGHTS<\/strong>

La Jolla Playhouse and the University of California, San Diego recently announced a new program offering each UC San Diego MFA playwriting student a joint commission for a new work upon graduation. The first two commissions, awarded to 2019 graduates Steph Del Rosso and Ava Geyer, were announced at UC San Diego’s graduation on March 23.<\/span>

Since its inception, the Playhouse and the University of California, San Diego have worked closely together to create an integrated environment for the adventurous theatre produced by the Tony Award-winning La Jolla Playhouse and the nationally-renowned theatre training program offered by the UC San Diego Department of Theatre & Dance. The Playhouse also offers professional residencies to every UC San Diego graduate student in acting, directing, design and stage management.  <\/span><\/p>\n

LA JOLLA NATIVE AND WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST WILL DISCUSS NEW BOOK AT WARWICK’S<\/strong><\/p>\n

After decades of working with communities to conserve mountain lions and other large carnivores, wildlife biologist and La Jolla native Jim Williams explores how wildlife thrives where conservation, community and culture overlap.<\/span>

In “Path of the Puma: The Remarkable Resilience of the Mountain Lion,” Williams celebrates wildlife research and conservation of ghost cats from Canada’s southern Yukon Territory to Tierra del Fuego in Argentina and Chile, exploring what makes this cat, the fourth carnivore in the food chain—just ahead of humans—so resilient and resourceful. He shares stories of magical landscapes, remarkable wildlife habitats, and the people who work to protect them.<\/span>

Williams writes, “They are beating the odds, and their success provides a remarkable opportunity for wild nature to regain a toehold and to shape possibilities for the persistence of natural systems. They are hope for those of us who believe our future will depend, in large part, on finding the wild.”<\/span>

The Junior League of San Diego is holding its 19th annual Food and Wine Festival on May 11. Attendees interested in supporting JLSD in its 90th year are invited to the afternoon event equipped with some of San Diego’s finest vendors while taking in breathtaking views of the La Jolla Cove.

<\/span>Beginning in the early afternoon, guests dress in their weekend best will gather at Ellen Scripps Browning Park for live music, silent auctions and unlimited tastings from San Diego’s finest restaurants, breweries, wineries, and distilleries. All funds raised at this year’s event goes to JLSD’s mission-based projects and supports its commitment to training women to be community leaders. <\/span>

The featured speaker is Tasha Williamson, co-founder of The Compassion Project, a small group of community activists who support families when they lose a loved one to violence. She was named “Voice of the Year” for 2018 by Voice of San Diego and recently announced her campaign for mayor at the San Diego Women’s March.  <\/p>\n

The Pacific Beach Town Council’s annual Graffiti Clean-Up will be held Saturday, May 4, 9 a.m to noon, at PB Presbyterian Church, 1675 Garnet Ave. Volunteers are needed! PBTC will provide all the training and supplies. <\/p>\n

Each year, volunteers get rid of about 1,000 tags in just a few hours. This event builds community pride and gives everyone a sense of satisfaction as they “take-back” and beautify Pacific Beach.
