Mission Hills residents Anastasia Zadeik and Chili Cilch and North Park resident Kenny Sucher are three of 10 winners of the 2019 San Diego Memoir Showcase.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38988\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38988\" style=\"width: 229px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-38988 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Anastasia.Zadeik-?????-229x300.jpg\" alt=\"Uptown residents rake in Memoir Showcase awards\" width=\"229\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 229px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 229\/300;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38988\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mission Hills resident Anastasia Zadeik was recognized for her piece \u201cNot Fine at All.\u201d (Photo courtesy Anastasia Zadeik)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sucher wrote a memoir titled \u201cElephant in the Room,\u201d which recounts a couple\u2019s quarrel in a humorous piece about about the struggles between passion, party, and parentage.<\/p>\n<p>Zadeik was recognized for her piece \u201cNot Fine at All.\u201d In &#8220;Not Fine at All,&#8221; Zadeik tells the story of a pre-dawn telephone call from her husband\u2019s ex-wife\u2019s brother that reveals a complicated web of lies, forcing her to reassess more than a decade of her past and setting in motion a chain of events that will fundamentally alter her life\u2014and the lives of those she loves most.<\/p>\n<p>Cilch\u2019s winning contribution is named \u201cPaul.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor many years, I&#8217;ve told my girlfriends that I need to write a book about my crazy dating life.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve often joked that while some people have guardian angels, I seem to have guardian practical jokers.\u00a0 \u2018Paul,\u2019 is a prime example of my prankster guardians running interference with my attempts at romance,\u201d Cilch said. She is currently working on a memoir tentatively titled \u201cSole Mates \u2013 Walking from One Relationship to the Next and Coming Home to Me.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38989\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38989\" style=\"width: 220px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-38989 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/chili.cilch_-220x300.jpg\" alt=\"Uptown residents rake in Memoir Showcase awards\" width=\"220\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 220px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 220\/300;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38989\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mission Hills resident Chili Cilch won for her memoir \u201cPaul.\u201d (<em>Photo courtesy Chili Cilch)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Executive Producer Marni Freedman, in association with the San Diego Memoir Writers Association (SDMWA), announced the winners of the fifth annual San Diego Memoir Showcase Competition in August.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s contest theme was \u201cI Didn\u2019t See That One Coming,\u201d and almost 200 submissions were received and reviewed by a panel of judges.<\/p>\n<p>Ten winning submissions were selected to be in the fifth annual San Diego Memoir Showcase. The showcase matches writers with local writing coaches and then hires professional actors and directors to bring their stories to life.<\/p>\n<p>These pieces will be performed before a live audience at the North Coast Repertory Theatre on Oct. 28. This year, there will be two shows: a 4:30 p.m. afternoon matinee as well as a 7:30 p.m. evening performance.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38990\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38990\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-38990 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/kenneth.sucher.jpg\" alt=\"Uptown residents rake in Memoir Showcase awards\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/300;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38990\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">North Park resident Kenneth Sucher wrote a memoir titled \u201cElephant in the Room.\u201d (Photo courtesy Kenneth Sucher)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In addition to the 10 showcase pieces, an additional 20 writers will be matched with a writing coach and featured in the upcoming 2020 SDMWA memoir anthology, \u201cShaking the Tree: brazen. short. memoir. \u2013 Volume 3.\u201d All the authors will have the opportunity to appear on the \u201cShaking the Tree\u201d book tour as an anthology author.<\/p>\n<p>The award-winning anthology, \u201cShaking the Tree \u2014 Volume One,\u201d was published in 2018 and featured 29 stories from the first three years of the San Diego Memoir Showcase. Its editors and writers were honored to receive the 2019 National Indie Excellence Award in Anthology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShaking the Tree \u2014 Volume 2\u201d will be published in November 2019.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three Uptown residents are being recognized for writing about their personal stories.
